90 Years of CITROËN Publicity on the Eiffel Tower

On July 4, 1925 – ie exactly 90 years ago – Citroën surprised Paris with a unique promotion: the opening of the international arts and crafts exhibition at the Eiffel Tower lit up the Citroën logo. To this day, the Citroën brand is known for innovation and creativity, both in the development of new technologies and models as well as in advertising.

Not only in the area of automobile production the company founder André Citroën was on new grounds: Early on, he recognized the value of advertising and branding, and so translated for example the “double angle” (“double chevron”) of the mechanical gear into the logo of the brand Citroën. He also repeatedly created positive reactions by unusual actions. This included the particularly distinctive advertising idea to the international arts and crafts exhibition, which took place in Paris in 1925. On this occasion the Citroën logo illuminated a large area of the Eiffel Tower.

The Italians Fernand Jacopozzi who had previously dealt with the construction of neon signs, designed the illumination with more than 250,000 light bulbs with different luminous intensity and in six different colors. The individual letters of the writing had a size of up to 35 meters. Tightrope acrobats and circus artists were hired to install the system, which mounted the rack at a dizzy height. A substation at the foot of the Eiffel Tower secured the power supply.

In time for the opening of the international arts and crafts exhibition on July 4, 1925 the Citroën logo lit up for the first time over Paris and could be seen from 40 kilometers away. André Citroën was watching the spectacle work together with his family from close up.

Until 1934 the Citroën lettering had been shining on the Eiffel Tower. The event served its purpose not only in view of the brand advertising, they proved beyond also very useful: When the American pilot Charles Augustus Lindbergh Junior in the night of 20th to 21st May 21 1927 made the first non-stop solo crossing of the Atlantic from New York ending in Paris, the illuminated Eiffel Tower served as a signpost.
