Number of Diesel-powered Historic Vehicles is Increasing

The press release of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA, Verband der deutschen Automobilindustrie), historic vehicle section:

Diesel-powered vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in the classic car world. As an evaluation of the registration figures of the Federal Motor Vehicle Office in Germany (KBA, Kraftfahrtbundesamt) revealed were, approximately 36.000 historic vehicles, i.e. older than 30 years, were equipped on 1-Jan-2015 with the compression-ignition engines. Thus the share increased in this vehicle group from 2004 (3.2 percent) to 2014 (7.3 percent) significantly. During the last five years, the amount of Diesel-powered historic vehicles increased by 86.9 percent.

Especially diesel vehicles from German manufacturers, which were built from the mid-1970s, are becoming increasingly popular. The highest ranked model is the Mercedes-Benz W123 Diesel series with 11,700 vehicles, about one-third of the total number.

Nevertheless, the Diesel “share” of historic vehicles is not big, (37.1 percent), compared to the total variety of historic vehicle engines. This is compared to new vehicles, registered in 2014, where the share of Diesel was about 47.1 percent. It is anticipated that the Diesel-powered share will increase significantly even with classic cars in the future, because the Diesel technology was just becoming more attractive with the introduction of direct injection and then with common-rail technology.
