(English below, en Francais au-dessous)

“60 Years of Hydro-Culture” at Citroën Club booth, Techno-Classica 2014

For the 26th time, the World Show for Vintage, Classic and Prestige Automobiles, Motorsport, Motorcycles, Spare Parts, Restauration and World Club Meeting, known as “Techno-Classica”, will open from March 26th to 30th, 2014. On 120.000 m2, divided into 20 halls and 4 open air areas, more than 1.250 exhibitors from 30 nations, of which are 220 Clubs and Interest Groups, will display their portfolio to the expected 200.000 visitors.

Of course, also the “Citroën-Strasse”, the exhibitor association of all German Citroën and Panhard clubs will be present, as always in Hall 9.1.

The theme this year will be dedicated to the Hydropneumatic technology, for many vehicle generations a unique selling point of Citroën. Appreciated by connoisseurs, a technically innovative masterpiece. We will be looking back onto six decades of “Hydro-Culture“.

Citroën Deutschland GmbH will issue a dedicated journal in the context of this exhibition. A quote from a related article, (written and translated by Amicale):

The Hydraulic system developed by CITROËN was a unique selling point for many generations of automobiles – valued by connoisseurs, a technically innovative masterpiece which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

Oscillating masses as a challenge

Let’s have a look back into the early decades of automotive engineering: In addition to classic technologies to increase comfort – such as the introduction of air-filled tires, mechanical springs, suspensions and shock absorbers – is also a question at the labs of CITROËN on how the efficiency can be further improved. In terms of comfort, swinging masses always poses a problem to those who deal with such dynamics. The engine’s vibrations could be successfully minimized by the introduction of the patented “Moteur flottant” (floating motor) technology.

Revolutionary: gas instead of torsion of a metal

But the central question remains: How many parts have to be moved in order to achieve an optimal suspension and damping? The Citroën engineers start from scratch and design a new, revolutionary approach. Instead of a bending a metal a completely different medium is being introduced: a gas which is going to be compressed. The transfer of lever travel is done by fluid instead of the conventional mechanisms, thus providing new opportunities for the efficient use of the engine compartment. The wheel is transferring the unevenness of the road surface via a piston inside a hydraulic cylinder onto a fluid, which is routed via small tubes into a sphere and there – separated by a membrane – compressing nitrogen gas. The amount of liquid in this system is controlled by the height corrector, an automatic control valve, which determines and controlles per axis the amount of hydraulic fluid, which a high pressure pump then adds to the circuit. Even when the car gets additional weight to carry, the corrector controls necessary pressure equalization, so always the ideal height of the body is maintained. If necessary, a manual adjustment in the interior allows the driver to select a different ground clearance on demand.

Citroën DS19 with Hydro-pneumatic – a Myth in Terms of Comfort

In addition to the first prototype testing, the technology is installed in large numbers on the rear axle of the CITROËN Traction Avant 6-cylinder, a model which is sold as “15-Six H” from April 1954 to June 1955 with a total of 3,077 units and among others is being used as a presidential limousine by the French President René Coty. On the CITROËN DS19, the legendary “goddess”, one year later the system is extended, complementing the now called “central hydraulics” with additional power steering and a dual-circuit brake system with load-dependent high pressure power assistance. The “cloud nine” comfort of that time is reached, a myth is born. The famous French philosopher Roland Barthes describes the “Déesse” as an “modern equivalent to the Gothic cathedral”: CITROËN soars to the competition.

Comfort Meets Sports

But even those who prefer sporty driving, can benefit from the hydropneumatic suspension. The Citroën SM is an impressive proof that speeds of up to 230km/h are possible with this technology. Quite a few wins and top placings at rallies in the 60s and 70s underline the outstanding performance. Over the years, the technology is continuously improved and continues to be a substantial part in the successor models such as CITROËN CX, BX, M35, GS and GSA. Even the CITROËN HY as an ambulance van gets temporarily a hydraulic suspension at the rear axle.

Dawn of the Digital Era

While the origins of this revolutionary technology were first carried out in the analog age, the introduction of the CITROËN XM paves the way into the digital era: With the “Hydractive” technology, electronic management is introduced. Thanks to the continuous evaluation of sensors for speed, steering, accelerator pedal, brake pressure and spring travel both a comfortable, soft as well as a sporty-stiff suspension is achieved. In 1993, the improved second generation of “Hydractive”-control is introduced in the CITROËN Xantia, with a tripled computing power – hence the body roll in corners can be actively compensated.

Ideal Damping, Determined up to 400 Times per Second

The CITROËN C5 from March 2001 and the CITROËN C6, which is produced from November 2005 to December 2012, are the latest models with hydro-pneumatic suspension. In the CITROËN C6, the ideal damping is determined and regulated in real time for each individual wheel up to 400 times per second. This car already today is considered a modern classic vehicle, and nationally in Germany as well as in a few countries dedicated car clubs have been founded dedicated to this car.

“Citroën-Strasse” at the Techno-Classica

The “Citroën-Strasse”, the exhibiting association of the German Citroën and Panhard clubs, will be present at the Techno-Classica 2014, and dedicates its retrospective technology exhibition under the motto “60 Years of Hydro-Culture“. In Hall 9.1 of Messe Essen (half an hour north of Düsseldorf) alongside about a dozen models, also very unique models such as the famous CITROËN DS Cutaway and CITROËN BX Cutaway models provided by the Conservatoire can be admired. The CITROËN CX prototype “Projet L” rounds off the exhibition. More information is available at www.amicale-citroen.de/.

VDA: Prices for Vintage Vehicles in Germany again on the rise

Prices for historic vehicles have gone up stronger again in the past year. The German vintage car index (“Deutscher Oldtimer-Index”) published by the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) was in 2013 recording an increase of 8.1 per cent (2012: plus 4.2 per cent). Especially in the second half of 2013, a significant upward trend in the classic car market was recorded. Thus, the “Deutscher Oldtimer Index” rose from 2,023 in 2013 to 2,186 points.

In the ranking of the vehicles with the highest price growth over the previous year, the BMW 520i is for the first time as a BMW model at the top of the list. The first BMW 5 Series (E12 model series) was produced from 1972 to 1981. In second place comes the legendary sports car Mercedes-Benz 300SL (Gullwing), which achieved record prices in recent months. Third place was occupied by the BMW 501 8-cylinder. Built from 1955 to 1958 this model was equipped with a V8 engine, which was redesigned by BMW after the war. Of these luxury vehicles in addition to the saloons, a few convertibles and coupes were produced. Fourth place is also a BMW: The LS coupe, which belongs to the BMW 700 series, was built in 1964 and 1965. 5th place is followed by the Alfa Romeo Spider “Veloce Convertible”.

The first place in the ranking of the vehicles with the most compelling value since the start of the index calculation in 1999 is shared between two rather mass-market high-volume vehicles: the CITROËN 2CV6 (“Deudeuche” / “duck”), and the VW “Bulli” Type 2 T2. The high increase in value over the last 15 years can be attributed to the relatively low initial level in 1999 in both vehicles. At third place the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” is found.

In recent years, two independent developments can be reported in the Germany classic car market. On the one hand, on public auctions very high prices were obtained where cars with famous former owners, unique vehicles or race cars. Behind this apparently is an investment trend to switch to property values. On the other hand you can find real vintage car enthusiasts who spend on average for a vehicle less than 20,000 euros. The added value of these vehicles does not compensate for the steadily accumulating maintenance and preservation costs usually.

Such vehicles also form the core of the German classic car Index, which is determined based on market observations of the Bochum valuation specialists “classic-tax” and issued by the VDA. Because of seasonal fluctuations – high prices in the summer, on the other hand rather low in the winter – this index is published only once a year. For the determination of the index, 88 vehicles will be selected that reflect the German classic car market representative due to their specifications, their country of manufacture as well as their frequency. The current registration figures are taken into account in the calculation.

Citroën ECO 2000 Prototyp for sale @ Retromobile 2014

For fans and enthusiasts of historic Citroën vehicles, a very special auction will be held in a few days as part of the Retromobile 2014 exhibition in Paris – the auctioneer “Artcurial”, well-known for the auction of vintage cars and automobilia, is offering a prototype known as “ECO 2000” (actually the first of the three known prototypes Misc “SA 103”) on behalf of the Conservatoire Citroën, the historical collection of works of the company Automobiles Citroën.

Artcurial describes the lot as follows:

“…The oil crisis during the 1970s had a huge impact. Fuel consumption in cars became a major preoccupation, not just for commercial purposes but also political reasons, as reducing energy consumption became important on a national scale. Thus, in 1981 the ” ECO 2000 ” programme was launched, supposed to culminate in 1986 with the development of a vehicle that consumed an average of 3 litres of fuel per 100km.

This project was 50% funded by the government and a hundred engineers at Peugeot-Citroën took part in the research. The specifications stated that “all technical preconceptions be rejected, and the starting point should be the exploration of the widest variety of solutions across all areas.”

The studies resulted in four successive prototypes : SA 103, SA 109, SA 117 and SL 10. The last version, built in 1985 achieved a consumption rate of 2.4-litres over 100 km at 90 km/h, with an average of 3 litres – objective achieved!

The prototype offered, SA 103 – the first in the series – comes directly from Citroën Heritage, who has decided to part with it. According to Citroën, it was the ” initial synthesis of theoretical work undertaken, focussing principally on weight and aesthetics. The desire not to exclude any potential solution is illustrated through the use of the ” propulsion ” type architecture. In order to save time, the flat twin-cylinder engine was retained. ” The car weighs just 430 kg, with a drag coefficient of 0.267 and fuel consumption of 3.5-litres per 100 km. The 704cc engine develops 26 bhp DIN and the car has a top speed of 140 km/h.

A car prefiguring energy concerns that are increasingly present, this Citroën ECO 2000 provides a unique opportunity to buy a prototype resulting from advanced research carried out in the secrecy of a manufacturer’s design studio. A collector who is keen to invest in this project will be able to restore and put the car on the road, displaying its inimitable 80s styling. It can be registered with in France with a collectors registration…”

After the (for people interested into conservation of automotive history) rather disturbing news of the complete sale of the Heuliez historic Conservatoire collection in 2012 (Amicale reported) we asked the manufacturer in France to come back with a statement, to learn why the auctioning of unique objects of the company’s heritage is necessary and what strategy PSA Citroën pursued in this context, especially since the cooperation agreement between Citroën, Amicale and the clubs in Germany explicitly set as one of the joint objectives to preserve the historical heritage of the company.

Automobiles Citroën has promised us to come back with a statement at the Annual General Meeting of the international Amicale in Paris on the same day (07-Feb-2014), so we will keep you updated.

A vendre: Citroën ECO 2000 prototype @ Retromobile 2014!

Sign the Online Petition to Preserve the Hydropeumatic!

As some may have gathered from the rumors in recent weeks and months, Automobiles Citroën may plan to no longer offer the Hydropneumatic in coming generations of vehicles. For many fans and friends of the brand, who swear since years and decades to the driving comfort of the “HP” and hold their loyalty to Citroën, this rumor was perceived not postiviely at all – we have seen a lot of shocked faces and heard appropriate comments in the last months during talking to national and international Citroën enthusiasts, next to statements that the loyalty might be endangered also for new car purchases when the “brand of sympathy” might just become exchangable to any other marque.

An online petition has now been launched by international fans of the brand – we have received the french information via “Citroenet”, world’s leading enthusiast Citroën repository from England – and has already found a four-digit number of signatories.

We also ask you, your clubs and your club members to express your solidarity.

For those of you who do not speak the Language of Angels, here is a rough translation, we got this text from Julian Marsh, editor and owner of the famous www.citroenet.org.uk website, who also provided us with the translation:

Attention :
Mr. Denis Duchesne
Director PSA Excellence System

Petition against the ending of the PSA Citroën hydropneumatic system

With the creation by Citroën of the DS of 1955 (the petition creator has forgotten the 15CV H but his intentions are good so…), the hydropneumatic system revolutionised comfort, grip, ride and vehicle safety . It was so obviously a superior system from the outset, compared to all competing cars’ suspension systems. And with the addition of electronics, such as in the C6, we achieved a quality never before seen in wheel/road surface communication.

And it is at this moment in history that the Directorate of PSA has decided to end this wonderful invention that has made Citroën known worldwide and given the company its legendary reputation!

How can you erase 60 years of original art creation, which made Citroën “manufacturer of the century”?

At this point, can the demands of financial and stock requirements which are manifestations of the perversity of the economy, supplant human intelligence and genius?

How can you make such an unacceptable decision to regress given that the marque has surpassed the competition with its spectacular innovations in road safety? (According to insurance statistics, Citroën is the marque least involved in accidents).

It would be a shame if the leaders of PSA were to forget that Citroën is the only manufacturer who managed to give the various components of vehicles (suspension, braking, steering, lighting, etc. ) intelligent cybernetic behaviour systems.

And how dare you leave in disarray all owners of Citroën hydropneumatic cars – from the DS 19 to the C6; cars which have marked the history of the automobile by their avant-garde qualities?

What will current Citroën owners do when they need to replace their current hydropneumatic vehicle, knowing that they no longer have the choice of metal springs of (an anachronism from the time of the ark)? This is a betrayal; an insult to the innovative engineers and designers of this technology; and a denial of scientific progress.

In addition, this decision is a strategic mistake, for, without this hydropneumatic system, Citroën models will lose their specific character and will just fall in line with their many competitors, becoming no different from all the others!

Many customers will leave the brand out of spite. Why continue to buy Citroën since nothing fundamental will distinguish this manufacturer any longer!

Do not erase this long and distinguished intellectual and industrial adventure of hydrotech and reconsider this absurd and desperate decision.

Personally take the time to study and objectively compare the qualities (especially ride comfort and handling) that Citroën models offer.

The hydropneumatic system must actually qualify for the best invention in automotive history and the fruit of genius and passion should not disappear!

http://www.mesopinions.com/petition/autres/contre-abandon-psa-systeme-hydropneumatique-citroen/11030

Monsieur Denis DUCHESNE
Directeur PSA Excellence System,

(English below: “First study about the vintage car market in Germany”)

First study about the vintage car market in Germany

The number of vintage vehicles (read: classic cars) in Germany has grown in the past five years continuously by an average of 8 percent YoY and currently counts more than 6.5 million vehicles. The market for classic cars represents an annual turnover of 14.1 billion Euro and includes maintenance and repair of vehicles, which are cars between the age of 15 to 29 years (German naming: “Youngtimer”) or those 30 years and older (vintage cars, German name: “Oldtimer”), and this number also includes expenditures related to this context. The purchase price or value of the vehicles is not yet included.

Cars older than 20 years do account for 14 percent of the total car and privately used truck volume in Germany (overall 44.7 million vehicles). In the coming years a further growth is expected. This is the result of the market study “Wirtschaftsfaktor Young- und Oldtimer“ (translated: “classic cars: an economic factor”) by the BBE Automotive GmbH on behalf of VDA (Verband der deutschen Automobilindustrie / Association of the German Automotive Industry), VDIK (Verband der internationalen Kraftfahrzeughersteller / Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers), ZDK (Zentralverband Deutsches Kraftfahrzeuggewerbe / German Federation for Motor Trades and Repairs), Bosch, Vredestein, FSP (partner of TÜV Rheinland) , Wuerttembergische insurance, Santander, the trade magazine “Oldtimer Markt” and the automobile association AVD (Autmobilclub von Deutschland). This is the first time that comprehensive and reliable data about the market for Classic Cars in Germany has been aggregated.

classic-car-studie-03

At a joint press conference in Frankfurt am Main the VDA, VDIK and ZDK together with BBE presented the study which has prepared a more in-depth anaylsis of classic cars based on data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA, Kraftfahrtbundesamt Flensburg), a nationwide survey conducted with more than 1,700 classic car drivers and also analyzing the comprehensive range of over 13,000 vintage vehicles’ owner changes.

Robert Rademacher, president of the German Federation for Motor Trades and Repairs (ZDK), said: “The study shows that there are three groups in the market for classic automobiles: the genuine vintage car with an age of 30 years and older; the Youngtimer cars, used as leisure vehicles, and finally the more than 15-year-old cars that are still in daily use, despite of their advanced age”. It is remarkable how strong the market is divided into “Emotion” and “Rationalism”. He calls 39 percent of vehicles to be the “real” vintage cars (620,000 units) or youngtimers (1.94 million) which are used primarily in leisure time; 61 percent (3.98 million units) are older vehicles that are still used on a daily basis.

“Those who drive their 15 year or older car on a daily basis, are dependent on this type of cost-saving individual mobility. The other group, i.e. the holder of classic cars or youngtimers who use these cars only during free time, live the “Fascination Automobile”. They have a strong emotional attachment to these old vehicles. And they spend significantly more money for maintenance, preservation and maintenance of each vehicle: on average, there are almost 5.300 Euro spent annually on those 30+ year old cars, while the owner of Youngtimers who use their car on their leisure time invests around 2.900 Euro per year, and while the every-day-driver is only spending about 1.300 Euro per year on his car” said Rademacher. Fuel costs and road tax are not included.

The average value of the car determined by BBE as part of the survey also reflects this: For 30+ aged cars the value is around 19.600 Euro, at leisure Youngtimers around 11.400 Euros and the value of recent classics that are still driven daily only is to an average of about 2.050 Euro. Accordingly, the annual mileage is different: With 30+ year old classic cars there are almost 2.600 kilometers spent each year, the leisure youngtimers count around 6.900 km, while classic cars that are driven daily even have an annual mileage of ca. 11.600 km.

Both for the automotive manufacturers as well as for the motor vehicle industry both groups are of importance: “The driver of an old used car is going to buy in a few years a younger used car – and one day a new car. So we should take serious especially those customers who currently drive older cars to work every day in the same way as the car enthusiasts who invest a lot for their beloved classic car and its maintenance”said Rademacher.

The fascination of classic cars is one that nobody could escape from, says the ZDK president: “One experiences this every year at the numerous classic car rallies and trips in the spring and summer, it can be experienced during the trade fairs, and it reflects the activities of the classic car clubs and the manufacturers with their fascinating museums.”

“The importance of the market for classic cars is growing – last but not least for the specialist workshops in the German automotive industry. The automotive industry with its nearly 38.000 enterprises cares of course to ensure individual mobility for all mentioned customer groups – and last but not least offers modern replacement for daily users of classic cars” underlined Rademacher.

Meanwhile, many car dealerships and repair shops would have recognized that the classic cars also is a business area with future potential. Nationwide, there are over 1.500 enterprises that are dedicated to classic cars only in Germany. “The requirements for repair, maintenance and restoration of classic cars are particularly high. It depends on specialized knowledge and skills, coupled with experience in any motor vehicle operation which are not present in just any car repair shop” said the ZDK president.

“Therefore, we have set certain standards in the automotive industry, which must be met by an enterprise if it wants to be associated with the additional attribute “Fachbetrieb für historische Fahrzeuge” (translated: “enterprise specialized on historic vehicles”). This attribute tag is awarded since 2009 to companies that meet these contractual standards for the maintenance and repair of historic vehicles. And the compliance to these standards is regularly reviewed. Meanwhile, there are nationwide around 500 of such specialized companies and about 50 trained experts who create their certification” Rademacher said.

Who wants to maintain and repair classic automobiles must ensure to get the knowledge about the cars of yesterday and share them. “Therefore, it is very good to see that now about 60 young automotive mechatronics are participating in the pilot project to gain additional qualification for vintage and classic cars technicians. We want to make the young generation of our budding professionals ready for the future business with the heritage of classic automobiles” underlined the ZDK president.

Dr. Ulrich Eichhorn, Director of the Association of the Automotive Industry in Germany (VDA), said: “In Germany, the automobile was invented over 125 years ago. The strong brands of our manufacturers and suppliers live and maintain this great tradition. Thus, the core brand is strengthened. The history instigates and shapes brand identity. It is an essential part of brand differentiation, it provides orientation and creates trust. This long and successful history has contributed to the German automotive industry now has its own seal of approval that is circumscribed with ‘Made in Germany’.”

With vintage cars, a brand promise will be redeemed: “These classic vehicles are an equivalent in a very emotional way for values such as quality and durability, innovation and timeless style. Therefore, manufacturers maintain the heriage of its historical models” says Dr. Eichhorn.

As early as 2007, the VDA has established a business section related to “historic vehicles . In a committee related to this subject, the heritage responsibles of the car manufacturers and some suppliers meet on a regularly basis to ensure that also vintage car can continue to drive on public roads in the future. Dr. Eichhorn said: “There are three main areas being addressed: 1. Strengthening the image of vintage cars in public, 2. stayint in close contact with the governmental decision makers in Berlin and Brussels in order to protect the interests of classic cars, and 3. assuring the technical support and supply of these vehicles”.

Dr. Thomas Almeroth, Managing Director of the Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDIK) said: “The importance of youngtimers and vintage cars in the German market is constantly growing. For our VDIK member companies, the representatives of the international car brands in Germany, this market plays a increasingly growing economic role under the aspects of brand building, brand management and brand loyalty. Therefore the VDIK has taken an intiative together with VDA and ZDK to execute this story, as we are also member in the “Parlamentskreis Automobiles Kulturgut” (parliament committee for the automotive heritage). On the fair “AUTO MOBIL INTERNATIONAL (AMI)”, this year held from 30 May to 8 June 2014 in Leipzig, we will focus on the initiative of VDIK and present a special exhibition area extensively reflecting the topic of historic cars / classic cars.”

Gerd Heinemann, CEO of BBE Automotive, presented the study and emphasized: “The segment of motorists who use their classic cars on a daily basis makes 61 percent of the vehicle fleet, but its share of total expenditure is only 37 percent. Nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of the expenditures are done by the owners of vintage and classic cars: they look at her car with passionate emotion and justify the expenditure as a worthwhile investment in their favorite hobby.”

The market of 14.1 billion Euro encompasses maintenance, repair and restoration costs as well as expenses for car insurance, tires, rims and related product areas such as clothing, automobilia or monthly parking costs and expenses in the tourist sector.

According to Heinemann, domestic vintage inventory is dominated by the brands Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz with 89,000 resp 80,000 vehicles. As the first European import brand, Fiat is found at No. 7. The top five list of vintage cars is being led by the VW Käfer (“old Beetle”), followed by Mercedes Type W123, Opel Kadett and Mercedes-Benz /8 and Mercedes-Benz SL Type 107. “We are convinced that even if import brands still play a minor role in the vintage spectrum in Germany, the potential of these brands should not be underestimated. The import brands increasingly recognize the opportunities that offer classic cars for their own core brand value” emphasized Heinemann.

Additional comment by Amicale Citroën Deutschland:

we have been involved early by the VDA to involve German Citroën and Panhard clubs respectively their members into this study, and have been informed that a larger number of French car enthusiasts have been providing feedback to this study. Thank you to all participants to make this possible! 🙂

Vorreiter in Sachen Elektromobilität

20 Years of AX Electrique – Pioneering Electric Mobility

Twenty years ago, in December 1993, Citroën started the production of the Citroën AX Electrique, the first larger-scale produced electric vehicle. The brand thus positioned itself as a pioneer in electric mobility and paved the road until today. The latest example of the evolution is Citroën’s Multicity Car Sharing in Berlin/Germany, the first station-independent, purely electrical one-way car sharing in Germany, with which the brand also positions itself as a mobility service provider.

Seven years after the introduction of the Citroën AX in 1986, the 100 percent electric-powered AX Electrique was perceived as some outstanding offering: no emissions, no engine or exhaust noise. The electric version of the compact car had a range of fifty miles and achieved a top speed of 91km/h.

The Citroen AX Electrique was equipped with a DC motor, the power being supplied from a battery. An electronic control unit registered , controlled and monitored the commands of the driver and the use of electrical energy. It also provided for charging the driving battery by the built-in charger and limited the vehicle’s performance when the power was about to decease or the temperature limits have been reached.

1995.citroen-ax-electrique-02

Steering, braking system and all other functions except the heating of the Citroën AX Electrique was derived from the conventional AX. Since the electric motor in the Citroën AX Electrique was very efficient and produced little waste heat, the use of additional fuel-based heating was necessary to provide convenience for the cold days.

The AX Electrique had neither a manual gearbox nor a neutral position or a clutch. Driving the electric car was very similar to that of a vehicle with automatic transmission. Releasing the accelerator pedal turned the efficient transmission engine automatically into a source for energy recuperation.

A conventional 12-volt battery powered all the accessories of the AX Electrique. It was loaded from the main transmission battery via a “converter” which has the task of an alternator. The driving battery consisted of a group of blocks for the storage of electrical energy, which are placed in three containers. These were nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries. Between the motor and battery there was a safety device: a circuit breaker unit whose job it was to provide or disconnect the electrical connection between the motor and the drive battery. The entire system had fuses and circuit breakers.

The traction battery, the electric motor and the electronic control unit integrated with the connection block are cooled by the air ventilation or by circulation of cooling fluid.

The Citroën AX Electrique has been produced in a total of 374 units from December 1993 to 1996.

A Pioneer in the field of electric mobility

With the introduction of the AX Electrique, Citroën demonstrated as early as 1993 a technology which was continued in 2010 with the introduction of the 100 percent electric-powered models Citroën C-Zero and Berlingo First Electric.

Just four years earlier, the first electric vehicles were realized based on the Citroën C15 and C25 models. The experience of the practical operation of a few hundred copies of both models were evolved into the development of the AX Electrique, the next generation of electric cars.

The roadmap of electric vehicles continued in 1997 with the introduction of the Citroën Berlingo Electrique which was built in a quantity of 1749 vehicles. The Citroën Saxo Electrique was produced from 1996 to 2003 with a total of 2,174 units.

In December 2010 the introduction of the Citroën C-Zero followed, the first large-series-produced electric vehicle . The 100 percent electriv vehicle convinces with zero liters of fuel consumption, zero CO2 emissions, zero noise and numerous features. The electric runabout is a real car, perfect for urban and countryside uses, with four seats and fully equipped.

After Citroën had proven its pioneering role in electric vehicles over the years, from August 2012 the introduction of Citroën Multicity Carsharing in Berlin set another milestone. Over 6,000 customers have already registered for the first station independent, purely electrical one-way car sharing in Germany. In the federal capital, 350 purely electric Citroën C-Zero are available for the customers as of today. For 2014, an expansion of the electric vehicle fleet to 500 Citroën C-Zero is planned. In addition, Citroën is examining the possibility of introducing the carsharing concept in other German cities.

The history of Citroën electric vehicle goes on: In the coming year, an electric van especially conceived for tradesmen will be introduced: the Citroen Berlingo Electric. This car is based on the latest generation of the Berlingo panel van and it’s business attributes (load capacity of up to 4.1m3, maximum payload of 685 kg) and the latest technologies.

Das Erlebnis DS World Paris

The Amicale Citroën Deutschland congratulates CITROËN for the realization of this unique and inspiring project and hopes that it will materialize also at other places around the globe!

DS WORLD PARIS, THE SOUL OF THE DS LINE

CITROËN is opening a new showcase dedicated exclusively to the DS world, the DS World Paris, on 27 November 2013. Located at 33 rue François 1er in the middle of the city’s famed “Golden Triangle” (delimited by the Champs-Elysées, George V and Montaigne avenues), the DS World Paris is a venue for sales, shows and history – with the spotlight firmly on DS line models – and a place for experience, emotion, open to artists.

CITROËN’s DS line is inspired by the finest in French-style luxury. To express its character, the DS line needed an emblematic showcase in the city that saw the birth of the legendary DS. The result is the DS World Paris. Behind a listed Art Deco façade lie three “levels of experience” highlighting DS models, talent and heritage. The DS World Paris immerses visitors in the DS universe, where the emphasis is on creation, as seen in a bold roster of artistic and cultural events.

1969-citroen-ds-champs-elysees-chassis-no-1000000

With the DS line showcase – the only venue of its kind in Europe – the Brand has yet another asset for attracting the public. It is also a point of sale, aimed at winning over new customers by bringing them exclusive and personalised services and by showing them the most beautiful vehicles in the line, including the CITROËN DS3 DS World Paris, a limited edition model produced in just 15 units. A true international flagship, the DS World Paris is the second DS-dedicated venue, joining the DS World in Shanghai that opened in March 2013.

The DS line story is about success, conquest and growth. In an impressive global achievement, CITROËN has sold over 400,000 DS line models since launch in 2010. With the DS World Paris, the Brand is pursuing its singular destiny in the automotive industry, having successfully launched a line of distinctive products with bold choices on styling, architecture, sensations and refinement.

Knowledgeable fans, passionate visitors and customers are all welcome.

DS WORLD PARIS, SHOWCASING THE DS UNIVERSE

The DS World Paris is a place for inspiration, where visitors can find out all about the design of the DS line, a subtle blend of avant-garde and heritage that has risen to prominence around the world since its creation.

From the legendary 1955 DS to recent models and radical concept cars, the DS World Paris brings the past and the future together.

In the beginning was the DS…

DS fame began with the CITROËN DS, launched in October 1955 at the Paris Motor Show held in the Grand Palais. The new model’s design and technologies quite simply turned the automotive sector on its head. The heritage of the DS line is spotlighted on the first level of the DS World Paris, where visitors get to learn more about the saga of the CITROËN DS. The model on show for the opening is one of the very first in the prestigious line: a 1956 CITROËN DS19.

ds-world-paris-03

The CITROËN DS adventure continues

The DS saga continues today with the CITROËN DS3, DS3 CABRIO, DS4 and DS5, the models that make up the DS line and continue to uphold the Brand’s “Parisian” values and know-how. The DS line is unfailingly informed by the same culture of French-style luxury.

The most beautiful models in the DS line will be exhibited throughout the year. For the opening, the limited edition CITROËN DS3 World Paris is on display, alongside the youngest member in the line-up, the CITROËN DS3 Cabrio.

Starring on the lower level are the CITROËN DS4 and DS5, both featuring “Faubourg Addict” body trim that artfully stages the DS logo.

The future of the line is suggested by concept cars, with Wild Rubis the inaugural example.

Wild Rubis, a concentrate of DS styling

The Wild Rubis concept car previews the future SUV model in the DS line with a subtle blend of refinement and power. Powered by full-hybrid plug-in technology, it stands as a concentrate of DS styling, wild and sophisticated down to the last detail, from the mobile lighting modules that activate on ignition to the wheels and tail lights graced by the DS logo and the rear end with its sculptural design.

The CITROËN DS3 DS World Paris, a jewel of elegance and object of desire

citroen-ds3-ds-world-paris-01

“The CITROËN DS3 DS World Paris was designed exclusively to celebrate the DS World Paris,” says DS styling head Thierry Metroz. Produced in just 15 units and sold only at the DS World Paris, the limited-edition model targets the biggest collectors with a passion for the DS line.

Inspired by Art Deco architecture and reflecting French artisanal expertise, the CITROËN DS3 DS World Paris is a jewel of Parisian elegance. The exclusive model is cloaked in matte ash grey body paint and Trinitario brown of the roof and wing mirror shells. The colours were created specially for the new model.

Refinement dominates inside in the shape of prestige materials. The seats, dashboard insert, gear stick handle and central armrest are upholstered in Trinitario brown Nappa leather with beige overstitching developed by the Brand’s craftsmen-upholsterers. The numbered DS World Paris badge, made in oak and inlaid on the dashboard insert, makes each model unique. The original wood touch also features on the door panels.

The CITROËN DS3 DS World Paris is available with a 120 bhp petrol engine (VTi 120) and an automatic gearbox.

Exclusive and personalised services

At the DS WORLD PARIS, customers get tailored advice and special, all-new services including home deliveries of new vehicles across the Ile-de-France region and “jockey” vehicle pick-ups for servicing operations. All DS customers benefit from a free one-year concierge service and invitations to headlining events through the CITROËN DS Privilege club. Customers can enjoy chauffeured tours of Paris in an original CITROËN DS23 or rent the legendary car themselves.

A boutique showcasing the DS lifestyle

The DS World Paris boutique proposes a collection of objects informed by heritage, refinement and daring – the key qualities of the DS line.

ds-sac

DS Lifestyle products are sensual and refined, with an audacious style that is classic and contemporary in equal parts. Products include a wallet, a special wallet for vehicle registration papers, a phone case and a key ring, all of which will slip perfectly into “DS Addicts” bags. Reflecting DS styling and available in limited editions and permanent collections, each creation is inspired by French-style luxury culture, with top-quality materials and fit and finish of the very highest standards.

For the opening of the DS World Paris, CITROËN is launching the first product in its DS Lifestyle luggage line, the “DS 48H” weekend bag, available in a limited edition and in an exclusive avant-premiere at the DS World Paris. Its sophisticated lines and elegant finish blend haute couture and design. A partner in adventure, the bag is made from French-origin full-grain calf leather of outstanding quality, crafted by Tanneries Roux, and assembled by France’s renowned Renouard leatherworks. The smooth leather is enhanced in parts with embossed leather featuring a
delicately drawn DS logo in relief.

DS WORLD PARIS: THE EXPERIENCE
Stepping into the DS World Paris

“The DS World Paris focuses squarely on the very essence of DS, a distinctive take on luxury à la française. Every detail and every space was fully thought through and designed as you would a haute couture fashion collection,” says Julien Faux, director of the DS World Paris.

ds-world-paris-04

Fronted by a listed Art Deco façade, the DS World Paris is home to a 600 square-metre space bearing the colours of the DS line – black, champagne and carmine – and designed according to the cues and values of high-end boutiques, with an emphasis on elegance, charm and purity. The DS World Paris immerses visitors in the DS universe and awakens all the senses.

Sight

The DS World Paris is an inspired setting, strong on creativity and emotion. The balance struck between colours, lighting and shapes brings a sense of serenity, a harmony that appeals to the eye with a view to enhancing the cars on show.

An astonishing, tailor-made chandelier looks down on the DS World Paris from a height of 3.8 metres. With 900 blown-glass beads hand assembled on 1,300 optic fibre filaments, it offers countless wave-like surfaces that shimmer in tune with the light.

Refinement is also the keyword with the furniture, particularly the DS Sofa, created by DS designers at the CITROËN styling centre. The DS Sofa is a one-off piece, presented at the Milan Furniture Show in March 2013, whose curves speak of flow and movement, suggesting a levitating vehicle body.

Touch

Particular care was taken in the choice of materials. The DS logo appears on the walls, whose surfaces alternate between lacquer and leather-inspired trim.

One wall is used to display the leathers and upholstery tools used for DS line models, perfectly conveying the knowhow of CITROËN’s craftsmen-upholsterers.

Smell

DS World Paris is also home to a special fragrance that subtly accompanies visitors as they come through the door at 33 rue François 1er. Scentys, a fragrance diffusion expert, worked with renowned perfumer Antoine Lie to create an exceptional fragrance that distils the DS spirit. The result is a consummate alchemy of ginger, cardamom, iris powder and clear musks blended with a base of Chinese cedar and Haitian vetiver.

The DS World Paris fragrance evokes history and elegance, making up the venue’s olfactory identity. It is also available in candle form in the DS World Paris boutique.

Hearing

The elegant musical signature developed by the Sixième Son music design agency for the DS World Paris is called “Cousu Mots”, or “Word-Stitching”. The DS sound is one “you can touch”, a bounteous mix ranging from jazz to timeless classical pieces, possessing a sense of tangibility – a knowing blend of electro and experimental – and creating a free-feeling lounge atmosphere.

The soundtrack also features transitions, sound effects and interviews with celebrities and talented individuals at CITROËN. Listeners can have fun trying to put the voice to the face of the people starring in CITROËN DS ads.

A cultural and artistic space open to creativity

“In our approach to personalisation, we wanted the DS World Paris to be on the cutting edge of the avant-garde, in tune with creative communities and breakthrough artistic experiences. We will choose and create events that echo our world and surprise visitors with a convincing blend of daring and know-how,” says Julien Faux.

To celebrate the inauguration, the DS World Paris is featuring a performance by visual artist Philippe Baudelocque, gastronomic creations from starred chef Mathieu Pacard, and a set by musician Thomas Dutronc.

Throughout 2014, the DS World Paris will host a range of artistic and cultural happenings ranging from fashion and gastronomy to art and design.

LE DS WORLD PARIS, L’EXPÉRIENCE DS WORLD PARIS

A suivre…

The best of two worlds or just a blasphemy? Porsche 911 DS

A few days ago, the Amicale visited Porsche’s “50 years of 911” exhibition in the Porsche Museum Stuttgart – an excellent retrospective about half a century of an icon which Porsche described so nicely as follows: “We do not know what currency will be used for payment in 50 years. We just know the 911 will be worth it”. On the other hand, the German magazine “Auto Motor und SPort” just voted for the DS being the “car of the century”. So why not merge both design icons into one?

The design agency “Brandpowder” just did that and created a visual experience called “Porsche 911 DS”. Certainly not everybody’s darling – some purists called it a blasphemy – it created though some stir amongst design enthusiasts.

So what is your opinion? Would you buy one? Please leave us your message and enjoy the original article at

Last Citroën vehicle produced in Aulnay-Sous-Bois

On October 25th, the French factory plant Aulnay-sous-Bois ended the production with a CITROËN C3 being the last vehicle off the line. The Citroën C3 is supplied to the Citroën Conservatoire. By 2014, spare parts are being produced in the Aulnay factory. The production of the Citroën C3 is now fully moved to Poissy.

The work Aulnay-sous-Bois was opened in 1973 on a 170 acre site northeast of Paris by CITROËN – and from 1976 Aulnay was a plant of PSA Peugeot Citroën jointly. In the 40 years of production, in Aulnay a total 8,568,391 million vehicles were produced: the Citroën CX (1974 to 1989: 1,013,069 units), the Citroën AX (from 1986 to 1995: 1,067,615 units) and the Citroën Saxo (1995 to 2003: 1,662,288 units) was followed by the CITROËN C3 (2001 to 2013: 2,081,433 units).

Since the introduction of the social plan for Aulnay on 2 May 2013, 2,700 of the 3,000 employed staff were subject to the restructuring activities: 1,100 of them have found new jobs within the company, another 1,100 went to other companies, 500 workers have gone into retirement or benefit from external reintegration measures. The PSA group supports each employee in his job search – this is handled on site by a team of 75 HR specialists.

At the same time, the group is working on various scenarios to reindustrialise the site. So companies should be attracted who have business demands that are focused on the skills of employees at Aulnay. With ID Logistics, in 2015 the first company start business in Aulnay – this creates 590 new jobs.
