(English translation below, en Francais au-dessous)

Impressions from the “Tour de Düsseldorf” 2014

The largest rally of French automobiles in Germany, the well-renowned “Tour de Dusseldorf”, took place on the weekend of July 6, 2014 for the 13th time now in the capital of Northrhine-Westphalia.

And again it is time to say “thank you” to the team of the “Destination Dusseldorf” around Boris Neisser, who once again spent a lot of time, dedication and passion to create a rally with regional highlights and a participation of more than 150 historic French automobiles in the region around Dusseldorf – this time towards Ratingen and around the Baldeneysee Essen.

Despite some challenging weather conditions – heavy rain and some high rims flooded roads partially set quite difficult road conditions – all participants came back to their destination to the city’s Old Town and were able to report from one or another anecdote on the go.

We are pleased that the cooperation with the “Institut Francais,” the “Destination Dusseldorf” and of course with the main sponsor Citroën and in particular the dealership in Dusseldorf has hit much good response.

As previously reported, is 2015 another highlight awaits us: 60 years of DS are going to be celebrated in both Dusseldorf and Cologne (see earlier report).

We think the beautiful pictures speak for themselves – big thanks to the “house photographer” Karlfried Steinhaus whose tireless commitment transfers much of the atmosphere of this event. His Flickr home page or ID “doubchev” is anyway always worth a visit. Thank you, Karlfried!

And now scroll down to watch the almost 200 pictures… 😉

French festival in Dusseldorf – an event not to miss even for people from Cologne and beyond!

German-French friendship brings people together – even Cologne and Dusseldorf! Under this motto, the “Institut français” and Citroën have launched an initiative: Both want to inspire for events that are an expression of this lived friendship – and executed in the other city.

The initiative starts with a campaign to promote French vintage vehicles: Cologne people who own French cars are invited to actively participate in the largest rally for French car with start in Düsseldorf’s Old Town. In return, the “Tour de Dusseldorf” comes next year to Cologne, and all citizens are invited to propose an attractive picnic site or a place for a photo shoot towards the organizers.

The Institut français located in Cologne shows until July 11 2014 an exclusive exhibition of photographs of the “Tour de Dusseldorf” 2013. Moreover, we’re preparing for the coming year in early July an aerial shot with 60 Citroën DS in the city’s Old Town. The reason: the legendary “goddess” will become 60 years old in 2015. Cologne DS-drivers are invited to attend.

Within the meanwhile famous “Tour de Dusseldorf” around 150 classic cars do start on July 5th as part of the Dusseldorf French Festival in the Old Town. This year, the tour goes on a approximately 115 km long ride towards Essen & Baldeneysee region, and participants are faced by many challenges but are also able to win valuable prizes. The award ceremony takes place in Dusseldorf on July 6. Organizer is the “Destination Dusseldorf”, a trade association with about 150 member companies.

Pierre Korzilius, head of the French Institute of Cologne and Dusseldorf on the initiative: “The French Institute has the task to promote with enthusiasm the French language, culture and way of life. In my role as the person responsible for both sites, it is obvious to point out attractive events with respect France – be they in Dusseldorf or Cologne.”

Peter Wilkenhöner from Citroën Commerce, also responsible as branch manager for the Citroën sales shops in Cologne and Dusseldorf, added: “The car is still too little understood as a cultural asset. We support this year for the first time as a partner of the Tour de Dusseldorf and want Francophile Cologners give the chance to witness live a piece of French automotive history in Dusseldorf.”

The Institut français

The French Institute of Cologne was founded in 1952 by a treaty between the French Republic and the University of Cologne. The Institute building, which is a protected monument today, was designed by the Cologne architect Wilhelm Riphahn. The aim of this branch of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to promote the German-French cooperation in all areas. The French Institute of Cologne offers:

  • a library with about 5,000 French-language books, including many children’s books, DVDs, CDs,
  • the Bibliobus, which goes to around twenty towns in North Rhine-Westphalia,
  • language courses, which are run by highly qualified native speakers,
  • the opportunity to take language exams. The French Cultural Institute in Cologne is a recognized by the French State examination center for the DELF and DALF diplomas, and diplomas of the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry,
  • sophisticated cultural events such as exhibitions, debates on current topics, concerts, readings and film screenings that take place in our function room or in our cultural partners.

The brand CITROËN

CITROËN stands for creativity and technology in the service of well-being. Since 1919, Citroën is a major player in the democratization of the automobile. The brand gives concrete and optimistic responses to the challenges of each epoch. 2014 models offer the CITROËN more of everything that really matters: more design, more comfort, more useful technologies, and all this at reasonable cost. The CITROËN Commerce GmbH is the largest Citroën dealers represented in Germany and with offices in Cologne and Dusseldorf.

Destination Dusseldorf

The Destination Dusseldorf, founded in 1989, is an association of some 150 companies that operate private business location marketing for Dusseldorf and region. With their events Dusseldorf such as the French Festival (July 4 to 6), the vintage car rally tour de Dusseldorf (July 5 to 6), DD-Golf Cup (13 September), ProWein goes city (March 15 to 17 2015) and Düsseldorf Jazz Rally (21 to 24 May 2015) the Association annually attracts around 500,000 visitors to the city. In addition, the destination Dusseldorf offers its member companies a networking platform and is actively for site issues. For more information: www.destinationduesseldorf.de

The Anniversary of Today: 25 Years of Citroën XM

In cooperation with Amicale Citroën Deutschland, the German subsidiary of the manufacturer (Citroën Deutschland GmbH) has issued a press release today related to this “modern classic”:

25 years ago, on May 23 1989, Citroën wrote history with the launch of the Citroën XM and fulfilled at the time the public’s desire for a high end model. The new top model introduced a new generation of the hydropneumatic suspension, enriched with electronic components: the Hydractive suspension. By combining the highest level of ride comfort and active safety, the Citroën XM put a strong accent in the luxury market.

citroen-xm-3

Hydractive suspension

The Citroën XM, which had his first major appearance in September 1989 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt/Germany, as a world’s first Citroën introduced the merger of several components: the chassis of a conventional production vehicle, the intelligence of electronic management and the flexibility of the hydraulic suspension: The Hydractive suspension was born, an evolution of well-known hydropneumatics technology introduced with the Citroën DS and known from the XM’s precedessor, the Citroën CX. With the Hydractive suspension, for the first time a variable suspension with electronically controlled, variable spring and damping coordination was realized. Five sensors systems – the steering wheel, accelerator, brake, speed and body roll – are combined with the hydropneumatics and determined an optimal suspension setting within a thousandth of a second (soft comfortable or sporty and firm mode).

Awards

Shortly after his presentation of the Citroën XM has received numerous prestigious recognitions – it was elected as “Car of the Year 1990” and was also able to win a total of fourteen national and international awards.

Vehicle versions and Conversions

From May 1989 to July 1994, the first Citroën XM series (Y3) waas produced, designed by Bertone . The second generation series (Y4), produced from August 1994 to June 2000, differed externally by the centrally mounted badge, and a revised rear spoiler.

Initially there the Citroën XM was only launched as a hatchback. As of November 1991, the station wagon version “XM Break” supplemented with unusually large storage space was complementing the offer. The special series “Onyx” (1993), “Prestige” ( 1994) and “Harmony” (1996) came to the market. The luxurious versions “Pallas” (1993) and “Exclusive” – the latter , among other things with leather upholstery, African rosewood, and fully automatic air conditioning – completed the offer.

citroen-xm-v6-1

The Citroën XM was also subject to several conversions: amongst them, Heuliez built the Citroën XM Break Ambulance; and the German coachbuilder Rappold in Wülfrath (near Dusseldorf) allowed its use as a hearse.

The Citroën XM in arts

With its launch, the Citroën XM also became the object of art. In the exhibition “XM’Art” a selection of contemporary representations of the automobile, and in particular the new top model of Citroën was presented. The exhibition opened in May 1989 in Paris and then traveled throughout Europe.

* Crème Princesse
* Demoiselles de Camaret en Bellevue
* Jambon en Croûte aux Epinards
* Poularde Strasbourgeoise avec Salade de Laitue
* Fromages
* Glace Petite Rosalie, Palmiers et Fruits

* Côtes Fronsac
* Mâcon
* Château Coutet 1920
* Vosne Romanée 1924
* Pommery et Greno
* Drapeau Américain

80 years of Traction Avant: Inauguration of the new Paris factory at Quai de Javel

As one of the historical documents related to the 80th anniversary of the Traction Avant, we present to you here the invitation to the inauguration of Europe’s most modern and largest automotive production of its time:

personen.andre-citroen-1932

While André Citroën had established his production facility since 1915 at the Seine riverside, known as the famous “Quai de Javel” (at the 15th district in the south-west of Paris), the site had to be modernized to keep pace with the anticipated growth of the company – it quickly turned out that the production capacity as it evolved during the 1920s were not dimensioned to suit the intended mass production.

While continuing the current production of the actual model range, the execution of this industrial groundbreaking renovation was done in a record-breaking time of only 5 months, now hosting new equipment for the efficient large-scale mass production and assembly of the anticipated new model to be build – the “Traction Avant”. Financially challenged by the difficult economic situation of the company, the banks were putting enormous pressure onto the project and insisted to be able to go into mass production as early as possible. The planned capacity was dimensioned to deploy around 360 cars per day (1934: 56.123 cars were produced in Paris) and was also prepared for a potential production enlargement: as we know, more than three quarters of a million of “Traction” were produced here at Quai de Javel!

On 8 October 1933, the new production halls were solemnly inaugurated. Under the patronage of Mr. Louis Serre, Commerce and Industry Minister in the government of Édouard Daladier (President of the Republic was Albert Lebrun) the banquet was held at the Citroën headquarters.

The culinary delights:

* Crème Princesse
* Demoiselles de Camaret en Bellevue
* Jambon en Croûte aux Epinards
* Poularde Strasbourgeoise avec salade de Laitue
* Fromages
* Glace Petite Rosalie, Palmiers et Fruits

and well as best-of-breed wines were complementing this premium dinner:

* Côtes Fronsac
* Mâcon
* Château Coutet 1920
* Vosne Romanée 1924
* Pommery et Greno
* Drapeau Américain

quai-de-javel-01

Automobile Citroën entertained at that time a dedicated company orchestra, known as the “Harmonie des Usines Citroën”, and entertained the guests alternating with the orchestra of the National Guard, and in addition to the amusing classics like “on the Beautiful Blue Danube” and the “Colonel Bogey” march of course the Marseillaise was not to be missed!

Finally, the well-known seven-minute “Marché Apotheosis” by Guillaume Balay was played – complementing the final execution of the opening ceremony!

Let’s close our eyes for a few seconds and put ourselves back to that moment time, imaging the great atmosphere and spirit during this special evening that will be remembered until today by quite a number of Citroënists worldwide……

🙂

We’d be happy to hear from you further info about the “Usines Citroën” as they help our many-thousand-readers to learn more about this era. Please leave a comment below. Thank you!

Citroën Deutschland GmbH issues press release on the 80th anniversary of the CITROËN Traction Avant

We’re happy to see that also the German subsidiary of Automobiles Citroën values the 80th anniversary of the car which set an essential part of the manufacturer’s DNA and is perceived to be one of the icons of Citroën today.

Our translation of the Citroën press release:

80 years of Citroën Traction Avant: “Gangster limousine” with front wheel drive

Exactly 80 years ago, on 18th April 1934, the Type 7A, the first model of the Citroën Traction Avant series, was presented. The design of the vehicle exceeded the experts’ expectations in many ways. As one of the pioneers in Europe, Citroën introduced for the first time the front-wheel drive in this model. The Citroën Traction Avant is considered the first myth of the brand and one of the pioneers of the modern automobile.

A part of the story of the Citroën Traction Avant is closely associated with the city of Cologne: 80 years ago, the production of type “Front”, the German version of the Citroën Traction Avant, was started at the factory in COlogne-Poll.

As one of the biggest differentiaters to most of the competitors at that time, the Citroën Traction Avant distinguished by its self-supporting, aerodynamic all-steel body. Engineer André Lefebvre and designer Flaminio Bertoni created an elaborate form with a one-piece cabin structure and developed a balanced weight distribution, which was achieved primarily by the significantly lower center of gravity and the installation of the gearbox in front of the engine and front axle.

Next to the front-wheel drive which led to the name “Traction Avant”, a very good road handling and a high level of comfort in addition defined the car. The rigid rear axle, which was conducted on two trailing arms with torsion bars, contributed significantly to a high level of ride comfort. No less sensation made further innovations such as hydraulic brakes, independent front wheel suspension or rack and pinion steering introduced in 1936.

The “floating” four-cylinder engine had overhead valves that were actuated by rocker arms from centrifugal casting, and wet removable cylinder liners. The 32 hp engine with a displacement of 1,303 cm3 was equipped with a three-speed transmission and had a consumption of ca. 9 liters per 100 km. The maximum speed was 95km/h.

The first type 7A was presented in 1934 within a few months superseded by the more powerful engine types 7B and 7C; the type 7S (“Sport”) was evolved into the types 11A and 11B. These were later known colloquially as “7CV” and “11CV”, named after their French tax classes. As an alternative to the classic sedan (as Legere and Normale) also the variants Cabriolet, Commerciale, Familiale and Faux Cabriolet (Coupé) were produced.

In addition to the legendary 8-cylinder prototype of 1934 (“22CV”) which were never produced in series and their whereabouts remain a myth, since 1938 the 15-Six (“15CV”) model with 2.8-Litre-6-cylinder-engine was introduced and a synonym for comfortable travel. The technical highlight was presented in 1954: the model “15-Six H” with hydropneumatic suspension on the rear axle: the predecessor of the legendary DS.

The low center of gravity, wide track and long wheelbase were ideal conditions for fast cornering and escapes – the “Gangster limousine” was born and had been a prominent companion in many French movies and thrillers that era.

From the Citroën Traction Avant, between 1934 and 1957 a total of 759.123 vehicles were produced.

80 years Type “Front” in Cologne

Also 80 years ago, the production of the Type “Front”, the German version of the Citroën Traction Avant, was started at the factory in Cologne-Poll. Between 1934 and 1935, 1.031 units of 7CV and 800 units of the 11CV were made at the Cologne plant located at “Poller Holzweg”.

* CITROËN C4 Cactus: Was wirklich zählt

18. April 1934:
Pressevorstellung des Citroën Traction Avant Typ 7A Berline

Mai 1934:
Vorstellung des 7A Cabriolets und des “Faux-Cabriolets”

(English below, en Francais au-dessous)

“60 Years of Hydro-Culture” at Citroën Club booth, Techno-Classica 2014

For the 26th time, the World Show for Vintage, Classic and Prestige Automobiles, Motorsport, Motorcycles, Spare Parts, Restauration and World Club Meeting, known as “Techno-Classica”, will open from March 26th to 30th, 2014. On 120.000 m2, divided into 20 halls and 4 open air areas, more than 1.250 exhibitors from 30 nations, of which are 220 Clubs and Interest Groups, will display their portfolio to the expected 200.000 visitors.

Of course, also the “Citroën-Strasse”, the exhibitor association of all German Citroën and Panhard clubs will be present, as always in Hall 9.1.

The theme this year will be dedicated to the Hydropneumatic technology, for many vehicle generations a unique selling point of Citroën. Appreciated by connoisseurs, a technically innovative masterpiece. We will be looking back onto six decades of “Hydro-Culture“.

Citroën Deutschland GmbH will issue a dedicated journal in the context of this exhibition. A quote from a related article, (written and translated by Amicale):

The Hydraulic system developed by CITROËN was a unique selling point for many generations of automobiles – valued by connoisseurs, a technically innovative masterpiece which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

Oscillating masses as a challenge

Let’s have a look back into the early decades of automotive engineering: In addition to classic technologies to increase comfort – such as the introduction of air-filled tires, mechanical springs, suspensions and shock absorbers – is also a question at the labs of CITROËN on how the efficiency can be further improved. In terms of comfort, swinging masses always poses a problem to those who deal with such dynamics. The engine’s vibrations could be successfully minimized by the introduction of the patented “Moteur flottant” (floating motor) technology.

Revolutionary: gas instead of torsion of a metal

But the central question remains: How many parts have to be moved in order to achieve an optimal suspension and damping? The Citroën engineers start from scratch and design a new, revolutionary approach. Instead of a bending a metal a completely different medium is being introduced: a gas which is going to be compressed. The transfer of lever travel is done by fluid instead of the conventional mechanisms, thus providing new opportunities for the efficient use of the engine compartment. The wheel is transferring the unevenness of the road surface via a piston inside a hydraulic cylinder onto a fluid, which is routed via small tubes into a sphere and there – separated by a membrane – compressing nitrogen gas. The amount of liquid in this system is controlled by the height corrector, an automatic control valve, which determines and controlles per axis the amount of hydraulic fluid, which a high pressure pump then adds to the circuit. Even when the car gets additional weight to carry, the corrector controls necessary pressure equalization, so always the ideal height of the body is maintained. If necessary, a manual adjustment in the interior allows the driver to select a different ground clearance on demand.

Citroën DS19 with Hydro-pneumatic – a Myth in Terms of Comfort

In addition to the first prototype testing, the technology is installed in large numbers on the rear axle of the CITROËN Traction Avant 6-cylinder, a model which is sold as “15-Six H” from April 1954 to June 1955 with a total of 3,077 units and among others is being used as a presidential limousine by the French President René Coty. On the CITROËN DS19, the legendary “goddess”, one year later the system is extended, complementing the now called “central hydraulics” with additional power steering and a dual-circuit brake system with load-dependent high pressure power assistance. The “cloud nine” comfort of that time is reached, a myth is born. The famous French philosopher Roland Barthes describes the “Déesse” as an “modern equivalent to the Gothic cathedral”: CITROËN soars to the competition.

Comfort Meets Sports

But even those who prefer sporty driving, can benefit from the hydropneumatic suspension. The Citroën SM is an impressive proof that speeds of up to 230km/h are possible with this technology. Quite a few wins and top placings at rallies in the 60s and 70s underline the outstanding performance. Over the years, the technology is continuously improved and continues to be a substantial part in the successor models such as CITROËN CX, BX, M35, GS and GSA. Even the CITROËN HY as an ambulance van gets temporarily a hydraulic suspension at the rear axle.

Dawn of the Digital Era

While the origins of this revolutionary technology were first carried out in the analog age, the introduction of the CITROËN XM paves the way into the digital era: With the “Hydractive” technology, electronic management is introduced. Thanks to the continuous evaluation of sensors for speed, steering, accelerator pedal, brake pressure and spring travel both a comfortable, soft as well as a sporty-stiff suspension is achieved. In 1993, the improved second generation of “Hydractive”-control is introduced in the CITROËN Xantia, with a tripled computing power – hence the body roll in corners can be actively compensated.

Ideal Damping, Determined up to 400 Times per Second

The CITROËN C5 from March 2001 and the CITROËN C6, which is produced from November 2005 to December 2012, are the latest models with hydro-pneumatic suspension. In the CITROËN C6, the ideal damping is determined and regulated in real time for each individual wheel up to 400 times per second. This car already today is considered a modern classic vehicle, and nationally in Germany as well as in a few countries dedicated car clubs have been founded dedicated to this car.

“Citroën-Strasse” at the Techno-Classica

The “Citroën-Strasse”, the exhibiting association of the German Citroën and Panhard clubs, will be present at the Techno-Classica 2014, and dedicates its retrospective technology exhibition under the motto “60 Years of Hydro-Culture“. In Hall 9.1 of Messe Essen (half an hour north of Düsseldorf) alongside about a dozen models, also very unique models such as the famous CITROËN DS Cutaway and CITROËN BX Cutaway models provided by the Conservatoire can be admired. The CITROËN CX prototype “Projet L” rounds off the exhibition. More information is available at www.amicale-citroen.de/.

Robert Opron

Robert Opron

We are particularly pleased to again welcome this year M. Robert Opron, the master of the shapes of the 60s and 70s at CITROËN, responsible for the design of CITROËN SM, CX , GS/GSA with his wife Geneviève Opron at our club booth. For the first time – and thus a very unique occasion in Germany – it will be possible to see the previous Head of Design Department of “Bureaux d’Etudes ” next to “his” CX prototype “Projet L” masterpiece and the subsequent production models.

We also expect high-ranking visit from the PSA Citroën Germany and France – the invitations to the top management have been sent out.

The Amicale boutique also welcomes another highlight – we have managed to invite for the first time the famous car-comic artist Thierry Dubois to our booth who will autograph the new German (and of course also available in French language) automotive comics published by “Salleck Productions”!

So: welcome – bienvenue – willkommen @ Citroën-Strasse 2014!
