The German ACI would like to thank to all Citroën and Panhard clubs and their club members for supporting this year’s activities on the “Citroen-Strasse” exhibition at Techno-Classica 2011 which has been celebrating both “La Ligne En Z – 50 Years of CITROËN Ami” as well as the “Creative Technology” on their 400 sq.m. booth for both the clubs and the international ACI partners. We’d also like to thank the owners of the exhibited cars for their engagement into making our joint presence a big success.

Explicitly we’d like to thank CITROËN Germany’s Head of Press, Mr. Stephan Lützenkirchen who has actively driven the cooperation with the manufacturer, as well as supported us in creating awareness within the CITROËN Germany subsidiary by inviting CITROËN employees to the show. We’re looking forward to extend our close partnership between the clubs and the brand. Once more it could be proven that CITROËN history can be supporting an active, good and also sucessful communication. We’re excitedly looking forward to expand our joint partnership with the manufacturer in one of the most important markets for the brand.

Here’s the official Press Release published earlier this week by the SIHA organizers:

Techno-Classica Essen Extends Its International Lead
178,300 Passionate Automobile Enthusiasts Bestow a Record Result on the Global Classic Vehicle Fair
Demands Continues to be Brisk – Collectors’ Automobiles are Popular

The 23rd Techno-Classica at Messe Essen is once more setting standards with the best result in its history: 178,300 automobile enthusiasts, again all of three percent more than in the previous year, bestowed a top-class response on the internationally leading global fair for the classic automobile. To the delight of the over 1,200 exhibitors who had come to Essen from more than 30 countries and registered brisk demand.

“In the Ascendant Internationally”

“The course of the fair was characterised by a stable market situation at a high level,” according to Anton L. Franssen, Managing Director of the organiser S.I.H.A. “Above all internationally, we have been able to be in the ascendant once more. A conspicuously large number of vehicles in the high-price category as from Euro 100,000 were sold to buyers from abroad – a clear sign of the status of Techno-Classica as the premier global fair in its sector.”

“Guiding Star Amongst the Classic Vehicle Fairs”

The fact that Techno-Classica has developed into “the guiding star for all the fairs in the historic vehicle sector” was also emphasised by Horst Brüning, President of FIVA – Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens and Vice-President of the FIA International Historic Commission: “The organiser S.I.H.A., the Franssen and Eck families, have performed pioneering work and have shown us what can be achieved with heart, passion and hard work.”

Automobilclub von Deutschland (AvD), traditionally the ideal sponsor of Techno-Classica, has highlighted the significance of the classic vehicle field by creating an independent seat for it on the executive council. Franz Graf zu Ortenburg, Vice-President for Classic Vehicles at AvD: “From the beginning, we have been closely connected with Techno-Classica. It makes an important contribution to safeguarding the automobile as a valuable constituent of the technical cultural assets. Techno-Classica is the outstanding platform for the industry, the trade, the restorers and the clubs. The large international family of classic vehicle enthusiasts meets up here.”

Passion is the Driving Force

According to the organisers, passion is the driving force behind dealing with this demanding hobby. Enthusiasm and fascination bring on the classic vehicle fever and positive economic effects associated with this (such as the increases in value to be expected) are welcome side effects. However, the decisive reason for falling in love with a classic vehicle is mainly passion.

Industry Presented Milestones in Automobile Construction

Thus, the emotions of the visitors were stirred up when they looked at the over 2,500 collectors’ automobiles from all epochs but the fair was absolutely characterised by the invention of the automobile by Carl Benz 125 years ago as well as by various other anniversaries of different car makes and types. The German and leading foreign automobile manufacturers used the fair in order to present milestones in automobile construction and to bridge the gap to the current automobile era.

The guild of the internationally leading restorers presented automobile rarities which had been lavishly reconstructed according to the original specifications and found new connoisseurs and purchasers at the fair.
The offers on the bargain markets on the outdoor sites at the fair showed that it is certainly possible to get into the classic vehicle hobby at affordable cost. Attractive youngtimers and young classics for example were available here already as from Euro 5,000.

Oldtimer Hobby Welds Together

The fact that intensively dealing with classic automobiles welds together in the truest sense of the word was illustrated by the very friendly atmosphere at Techno-Classica. The 220 clubs which once again competed for the title of the “Most Beautiful Club Booth” with a lot of creativity predominantly concentrate on exchanging tips and tricks, on helping to search for parts and, above all, on enjoying driving classic vehicles together. “Opel Kadett B und Olympia A Club Deutschland e.V. 1987” was chosen as the winner.

This trend illustrates how great the need for information is all in all and how intensively the genuine fans want to dive into the “experience of oldtimers”: The Techno-Classica organisers have observed a distinct increase in the interest in information about oldtimers in general and especially also about oldtimer events as well as the possibilities of active participation. Thus, there were more inquiries about oldtimer rallies, about touristic drives or also about pleasurable tours focusing on the combination of car driving and culture and of nature and technology.

The 24th Techno-Classica will take place at Messe Essen from March 21st (Press, Preview and Trade Visitor Day) to March 25th, 2012.

A treasure has been saved…!

From Denis Houriez in France we have received a little roll of 35mm film. Fragile and with damaged perforation it had to be restored – and of course digitalized. Finally this is now done! We are happy to present 21 intensive seconds of Kegresse history!

We will return with more information about the event – the snow tests conducted by Lucien Rosengart, the Norwegian part of it arranged by Mr. Faramond, head of Citroën’s Danish and Scandiavian branch in Copenhagen.

Watch the film here: http://www.traction.dk/film – the Kegresse homepage is http://kegresse.dk/

The car is a K1 with a very special Skiff-style body by the famous couchbuilder Labourdette, and very similar to the B2 Caddy Sport.

Thanks to ACI-DK Jens Moller Nicolaisen for this stunning info!

An exhibition at the Jewish Museum of Westphalia

Exhibitions are held regularly at the Jewish Museum of Westphalia in Dorsten. The subjects do not only have to do with Jewish history and present day but again and again art exhibitions showing contemporary artists also attract visitors to our Museum.

Now and then, however, the exhibition organizers try out subjects that are rather unusual for this museum. In autumn 2009 some 80 photos taken by the photographer and musician Linda McCartney, the late wife of Beatles singer Paul McCartney, attracted many new visitors to the Museum. Linda McCartney was born Linda Eastmann to Jewish American parents and her work as a photographer in the late 1960s and early 1970s brought her into contact with rock stars of the time such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors with Jim Morrisson and many others. The photos often show the stars in a very private atmosphere.

With “André Citroën” the Jewish Museum of Westphalia will once again be hosting rather an unusual exhibition. André Citroën was a genius in various ways. From the beginning he wanted to build affordable and practical cars. From 1919 he wrote European car history with his company. His principal interest was not to build luxury cars for a privileged class but inexpensive cars for many people. He wanted to open the way to a mobile life for as many people as possible. André Citroën soon recognized the value of advertising and brand identity and from double helical gears was born the double chevron Citroën logo. As an entrepreneur he was not only concerned about the well-being of his company but also of his employees and he contributed significantly to improving working conditions and benefits, for example paying his employees a bonus of one extra month’s salary.

The Jewish Museum of Westphalia is presenting an exhibition conceived by Dr. Frauke Dettmer which was first shown in 2007 at the Jewish Museum, Rendsburg. The exhibition shows the innovative work of the car manufacturer, tells us that Citroën was the first European to have cars manufactured on an assembly line and made the car company the most innovative brand of the 20th century. However, it also shows the origins of André Citroën and his family who came from the Netherlands. His ancestors in Amsterdam sold limes. In 1811 Jews had to take a surname and like many others his ancestors were inspired by their profession and called themselves Limonenman (lime man). Later they changed the name to Citroen (Dutch for lemon). In 1870 or 1871 the French part of the family history started. From then on this branch of the family had the name Citroën.

In July 1935 André Citroën died as the result of a serious illness. He left a life’s work which made France the most important automobile country in Europe of that time. To this day Citroën stands for the epitome of the avant-garde in automobile production.

In addition to the pictures and texts, exhibits include historical sales brochures, construction plans, models and many components. The exhibition and the accompanying events are supported by Citroën Germany and Amicale Citroën Germany (ACI-D). A vintage car meeting is also planned at the museum. The museum is seeking contact to Citroën car clubs that are interested in the idea of a meeting in front of the Jewish Museum of Westphalia in Dorsten. The contact is the exhibition curator Thomas Ridder M.A. (Tel. +49-2362-951431 – Email: ridder@jmw-dorsten.de)

The exhibition will be opened on June 12th at 11.00 and can be seen until July 31st, 2011.

///Stephan Joest.

english translation: (please spread to your clubs and members, thx)

It is just a matter of a few weeks and then world’s biggest classic car show, the 23rd “Technoclassica” in Essen/Germany will be welcoming almost 200.000 visitors from more than 41 countries. From March 31st until April 3rd, the big German Citroën car clubs will team up at the “Citroën-Strasse” 400sq.m. booth to celebrate the golden jubilee: “La Ligne en Z – 50 Jahre Citroën Ami” (http://50jahre.ami6.de/). Around half a dozen different types of cars will be shown to the audience, amongst them a rather rare original Ami8 Break Service.

Quite the highlight for our presentation booth in hall 9.1-135 will be the Citroën C60, the only still existing prototype with that famous “lunette arriere inversee”, the backward slanted rear window. Actually constructed as the next successor model to the “interim solution” Ami6, it still shows off elements of DS, Ami and also several styles which have later on materialized in the Panhard 24 (the C60 hydropneumatic concept and production cost quite close to DS level would not have met the price range in which it was supposed to compete against it’s mid-class segment rivals…).

Stephan Lützenkirchen

Stephan Lützenkirchen, Head of PR Citroën Germany

We are very proud about being able to show off this unique prototype at our booth, the first time that we can realize this for the German Citroën fans. We would also like to thank both the German Citroën subsidiary, Mr. Stephan Lützenkirchen who is head of the Press department and our new ACI-D counterpart, as well as the French Citroën headquarters and Denis Huille from the Patrimoine who have made this possible.

Next to the 1:1 car, smaller models of prototypes of the Ami series, the “maquettes”, will be displayed. These 3D-miniatures created by the famous “Bureau d’Etudes”, the Citroën design office headquarters in 15th arrondissement, will give visitors a glimpse on how the development of a new car is evolving over time.

It is stated about Flaminio Bertoni that the Ami was his most beloved creation which materialized into an orderable car. When we met Monsieur André Estaque (he headed the design office in that era) at Retromobile 2011, he confirmed this to us as he remembered also Bertoni talking happily about the “très joli fes” (a nice ass) of the Ami design. Hope you all share his opinion…! 😉

Additional contemporary documentation, details of the technology and memorabilia allow more insights into the era of “La Missis”, and a large multimedia production will complete the visual experience for our visitors.

The German car clubs will gap the bridge between the DS-Ami hybrid and the years after by several another highlights, amongst them the famous “DS Cutaway” model, once created for Jacques Wolgensinger in the mid 60s to visually expose the stunning technology of the Citroën DS. This will be the first time that this model will be on show after a careful restoration and cleaning process has taken place 3 years ago (check out www.dsclub.de for more details). Additionally, the 2CV “Samson”, XM, CX Turbo 2, SM and Traction Avant will be showing off “creative technology” of Citroën over the decades.

At the ACI counter, info from the upcoming 2CV World Meeting 2011 in Salbris/Loire (www.2cvfrance2011.fr) as well as Mick Popka from the ICCCR 2012 team (www.icccr2012.org.uk) will be present to allow discounted registration to join the upcoming global events. Oh, and do not forget to ask for one of the famous Citroën-Strasse red wines – the “Chateau de Vitrine limited edition” jubilee bottle is a well-sought collectors item!

Next to the club booth, the Citroën Germany booth in Hall 5 will complement the presence at Technoclassica. The celebration of “80 years of Croisière Jaune” and it’s extension into modern Citroën motor sport success is reason enough to present a stunning Kegresse P17 from the Conservatoire – one of the original “autochenilles” which joined the intercontinental raids.

NB: The Kegresse is named after the french engineer Adolphe Kégresse (1879-1943) who first worked in Russia and developed 1909 his enhanced transportation technology for the Czar, patented 1912. After the revolution he returned to France in 1919 and continued his works at Citroën together with Jacques Hinstin. Their works have been an essential contribution to establish a reputation of Citroën as a manufacturer of reliable cars.
For those who are interested into more details of Citroën Kegresse models, we recommend to visit the website of the Danish ACI Delegate Jens Moller Nicolaisen (kegresse.dk) who has spend a vast amount of time to compile an overview documentation on the Kegresse history. Well done, Jens!

Back to show – with the latest “C-Zero” true electric vehicle recently launched by Citroën, a rare “AX Electrique” will be presented to the Technoclassica visitors and give insights into early electricity-powered cars (German in-depth article at https://amicale-citroen.de/?p=964). Next to another Ami6 anniversary presentation, the soon to be orderable DS4 model will provide a preview on Citroën models for 2011.

Also Citroën Germany Head of PR Stephan Lützenkirchen is enthusiastic about the upcoming event: “We are very happy about this active and engaged CITROËN club community and we’re excitedly looking forward to extend our good partnership with the clubs and the ACI. This is where the passion around the unique CITROËN heritage is created and the outstanding history of the marque is being actively lived.”

So: experience lots of “creative technology” – we warmly welcome you at our booths!

On behalf of the German Citroën car clubs, the event team and ACI Germany

PS: For those who like the rear window style of the Ami, there is an interesting website to check out: http://autos-lunette-arriere-inversee.blogspot.com/ holds more than 3 dozen other cars which own this style element!

english translation by ACI-D Stephan Joest:

Latest news from VDA, the Germany Association of the Automotive Industry, historical section:

The value growth of vintage cars in Germany rose by 2.5 percent in 2010 compared to 2009. Also 2009, the index had risen only by 2.5 percent compared to 2008. At the end of 2010, the index scored 1,776 points. This means that the performance of classic cars in the past two years slowed down significantly. In the classic car “boom” year (2008) the vintage car index still rose by 11.8 percent. The performance of vintage vehicles is rather moderate than in bonds and securities. The German stock exchange index “DAX” grew in 2010 more than six times stronger (16 percent) compared to the vintage car index.

Number one on the list of vehicles with the biggest value growth is continuing to be the Citroën 2CV, followed by the Fiat 500 F, which has kept its rank from last year. The Porsche 924 is now in third place, it improved by eight places. While in recent years, the legendary Ferrari Dino 246 GT was on position 4, now the prices have stabilized and so this car made it downwards on position 10.

Biggest growth is expected from vehicles from Japan, with 2,130 points, followed by German Classic cars with an index value of 2,031 points.

The German Classic Car Index is published every six months by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA, Verband der deutschen Automobilindustrie), in cooperation with “Classic-Car-Tax”, a company specialized in creating ratings for classic cars. The German Classic Car index is still calculated as since 1999, according to the same criteria.

The data is based on market analysis of 88 different vehicle types from seven manufacturer nations, which represent in their entirety the German classic car market. To to avoid a statistical misrepresentation of the rating, the calculation of the index does not take pre-war vehicles into account because of their rather individual pricing. The initial value in 1999 was set at 1,000 points.

We are pleased to confirm Stephan Joest has accepted the Board’s invitation to become an Honorary Member of the ACI. He joins four existing Honorary Members, Claude Satinet, David Conway, Jean-Francois Ruchaud and Herman Sluiter.

Over the last 20 years Stephan has worked tirelessly to create a visual awareness of the ACI to the Citroen community. He took responsibility for ACI Marketing & Communications during his term of office and amongst other things, singlehanded, created and maintained the ACI website. As a key figure in the German ACI he has also regularly kept all ACI Delegates updated with any matters from this market that might possibly be of interest to those outside Germany.

On behalf of the ACI, the Board thanks Stephan for all he has done to help make the Organisation as strong as it is today. His considerable effort to date will continue to be appreciated – particularly by all who visit the website. Stephan will remain a delegate for Germany and we hope it will not be too long before he once again has time to contribute to the ongoing success of the ACI in his new role as Honorary Member. In the meantime we wish him luck with his work with the German ACI and hope he may now find a little more time to indulge his passion for the Ami 6.
