Der Citroën XM hatte die fast unmögliche Aufgabe, in die Fußstapfen von drei Legenden zu treten: dem Traction Avant (“Gangsterlimousine”), der ID/DS (“Göttin”) und dem CX. Zuerst schien alles in Ordnung zu sein: Das scharf gezeichnete, aerodynamische Design war etwas ganz Besonderes und auch der XM war voller technischer Innovationen. Es war der natürliche Gewinner des Titels “Auto des Jahres 1990”.
Die ersten Kunden erlebten jedoch die Kehrseite so vieler Innovationen: Ihre XMs brachen mit allen möglichen Fehlern zusammen. Als Citroën diese Probleme endlich gelöst hatte, war der Ruf des XM bereits so stark geschädigt, dass das Auto fast schon zu einer Randexistenz verdammt war.
In diesem soeben erschienenen Buch erzählt der Autor Thijs van der Zanden die faszinierende Geschichte hinter dem XM. Von den ersten Skizzen und Prototypen bis hin zur Einführung der ersten Modelle und aller Versionen, die Citroën im Laufe der Jahre in das Sortiment aufgenommen hat. Die Modelle, die nie weiter kamen als bis zum Zeichenbrett, werden auch in diesem Buch gezeigt. Erinnerungen und Anekdoten von verschiedenen Beteiligten beleben die Geschichte und die unzähligen unveröffentlichten Illustrationen machen dieses Buch zu einem Muss für den echten Enthusiasten.

The Citroën XM had the near impossible task of following in the footsteps of three legends: the Traction, the DS and the CX. At first everything seemed fine: the sharply drawn, aerodynamic design was something really special and the XM was also full of technical innovations. It was the natural winner of the ‘Car of the Year 1990’ title.
The first customers however, experienced the downside of so much innovation: their XMs broke down with all kinds of faults. By the time Citroën had finally solved these problems, the XM’s reputation had already been damaged so much that the car was doomed to a marginal existence.
In this book author Thijs van der Zanden tells the fascinating story behind the XM. From the first sketches and prototypes to the introduction of the first models and all the versions that Citroën added to the range over the years. The models that never got any further than the drawing board are also shown in this book. Memories and anecdotes from various parties involved enliven the story and the countless unpublished illustrations make this book a must for the real enthusiast.

Avec la lourde tâche de succéder à trois légendes : la Traction, la DS et a CX, la Citroën XM semblait promise à une belle carrière. Sa ligne aérodynamique et ses innovations technologiques en faisait même la prétendante naturelle au titre de “Voiture de l’année 1990”.
Mais les premiers clients vont vite déchanter. Pas assez aboutie, les pannes à répétition vont venir ternir la réputation de la XM. Et malgré les efforts apportés au fil du temps par Citroën pour fiabiliser son haut de gamme, le mal était fait et les ventes resteront marginales.
Dans cet ouvrage, l’auteur Thijs van der Zanden nous relate l’histoire fascinante de la XM, des premières esquisses et des prototypes jusqu’à son lancement et des premiers modèles commercialisés jusqu’aux différentes versions ajoutées au fil des ans par Citroën, sans oublier les modèles qui ne sont jamais sortis du bureau d’études. Enfin, les souvenirs et anecdotes des différents collaborateurs Citroën ainsi que les photographies pour la plupart inédites font de ce livre un vrai régal.
