DIE KEGRESSE / HALBKETTEN-FAHRZEUG B2 “SCARABEE D’OR”

RETROMOBILE 2023: BOLDNESS AND LIGHTNESS

During the 2023 edition of the Retromobile show, which will take place from 1 to 5 February 2023 in Paris, Porte de Versailles, L’Aventure Citroën will present, with the help of L’Amicale Citroën & DS France and with the support of the CITROËN brand, the Citroën OLI concept car surrounded by emblematic vehicles, tinted red and white for the occasion, the B2 Scarabée d’or (Golden Scarab) car, and the concept-truck from the film “Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom”.

CONCEPT CAR OLI

For the first time, Citroën is showing the OLI concept car to the French public. It is a manifesto that commits the brand to an optimistic, responsible and accessible electric mobility.

Clever, innovative, ingenious, against the trends and realistic, the OLI concept car is surprising, unconventional, and stands out for the strength of its ideas. More info on this concept -> https://www.citroen.fr/univers-citroen/concept-cars/citroen-oli.html

UNIQUE SILHOUETTES WITH BOLD STYLE AND LIGHTNESS

To welcome OLI into the Citroën family, OLI will be surrounded by emblematic vehicles that have marked the history of Citroën and whose bold styling and innovations have marked their eras by anticipating changes in lifestyles for the greater benefit of customers. Come and rediscover some of these emblematic vehicles, tinted red and white for the occasion…

C4

The C4, launched in 1928, brought Citroën into the modern era with its advanced suspension and floating engine, providing a level of comfort that was rarely achieved on a road network that was still poorly surfaced.

Model presented on the stand: C4 Torpedo of 1929

FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE

The first production vehicle equipped with front-wheel drive, a monocoque structure, hydraulic brakes and four-wheel independent suspension, the Traction Avant launched in 1934 had the best dynamic behavior of the time, much to the delight of its passengers, which earned it the justified nickname of “Queen of the Road.

Model presented on the stand: Traction Avant Cabriolet of 1937

CONCEPT CAR C10

Only Citroën could dare to propose in 1956 such a concept with such a daring and compact architecture, light, economical and technically so advanced, and also resort to aeronautical techniques for its design. The C10 made a big impression at the time of its presentation and its silhouette earned it the friendly nickname of “drop of water”.

Model presented on the stand: Concept car C10 (nicknamed “La goutte d’eau”) of 1956

2 CV

In 1948, the minimalist 2CV arrived to meet a strong market expectation: to be everyone’s car while being simple to manufacture, repair, and the cheapest to sell. In 75 years it has become a mythical vehicle embodying the philosophy of Citroën vehicles through its surprising design and product positioning.

Model presented on the stand: 2 CV 6 Club from 1990

AMI 6

Unveiled in 1961, the Ami 6 met the expectations of customers looking for a light, comfortable sedan less than 4 m long, with a spacious interior and a large trunk. Citroen’s answer is the famous revolutionary Z-shaped line of the stern: the inverted rear window allows for more space to access the trunk.

Model presented on the stand: Ami 6 Sedan of 1963

MEHARI

The Mehari is a clever, atypical and friendly leisure utility vehicle, celebrating its 55th birthday this year. Lightweight, with its thermoformed plastic body, it is not afraid of scratches or washing with a water jet. With its canvas roof or folding windscreen, it still enchants everyday adventurers.

Model presented on the stand: 1972 white Mehari

CX

With its fluid, slender and highly aerodynamic two-body design, its large glass surfaces and concave rear window, the CX was recognized in 1974 as “the” top-of-the-range car with an unconventional silhouette. In the cabin, the futuristic dashboard pushed the ergonomics of the controls to the extreme by grouping them in a “lunula”. With such assets, the CX will be elected car of the year in 1975.

Model presented on the stand: CX Prestige phase II from 1989

THE B2 CATERPILLAR MAKES ITS SHOW

To commemorate the centenary of the end of the first crossing of the Sahara by car, which took place from 17 December 1922 to 7 January 1923 with Citroën’s autochenilles, the replica of the “golden scarab” autochenille was exhibited at the exhibition on the stand of pre-First World War vehicles.
It took three years and 50,000 hours of work for the teams from the Arts et Métiers engineering school and the Château d’Épluches vocational school for the automotive industry to reproduce this superb replica of the “golden scarab” caterpillar exactly like the original. With Citroën as historical partner, this project was initiated and led by the association “Des Voitures & des Hommes”.

MADE IN GAUL AND INSPIRED BY THE MYTHICAL 2 CV, HERE IS THE CONCEPT-TRUCK!

Inspired by the legendary 2CV, come and discover the daring concept-truck imagined and designed by Citroën for the film Asterix & Obelix “The Middle Kingdom” directed by Guillaume Canet. An unprecedented challenge for Citroën’s styling teams, who created the concept car in just three months!

CONCEPT-CAR OLI

(Deutsch weiter unten, diesmal in englischer Sprache zuerst )

We are happy to share with you that a new book has been published in English language:

“Citroen CX – Aerodynamic Elegance”

To quote from the description:

The English language CX book
The CX book by Citrovisie first appeared in Dutch in 2014 and has been reprinted four times. There is also a French translation that has been reprinted twice. Over the years, the CX book has become the standard work in the CX field. However, the call for an English version remained so strong that author Michael Buurma and publisher Thijs van der Zanden joined forces with translator and Citroën expert Julian Marsh. The result of this project is almost ready now and can be ordered from December on www.citrovisie.nl.

About the book
In an almost encyclopaedic manner, and with great attention to detail, the creation and evolution of the Citroën CX is discussed by model year, by type and down to the smallest detail. This also includes the models that never got beyond the drawing board: a five-door CX, numerous never realised interior designs, a CX GTi with a diesel engine and an extended CX Pallas, to name but a few… Overviews with technical data, chassis numbers, body colours plus sales figures complete the picture. The book is amply illustrated with hundreds of images, most of which have never been published before. This makes this book an indispensable reference for the real Citroën lover.

Two versions
The book is available in a standard version of € 44.95 and a limited Prestige Edition of € 59.95. The latter has a different cover, a more luxurious finish and is signed by the author. The Prestige Edition is intended for the real collector and is printed in an edition of only 100 hand numbered copies.

Summary
Citroën CX, aerodynamic elegance
Author Michael Buurma
Translator Julian Marsh
Foreword by Pierre Leclercq, head of Citroën design
Published by Citrovisie in the Netherlands

328 pgges, 22 x 24 cm
Hard cover, full color
ISBN 978-90-831417-4-9

The Citroën CX book is available at www.citrovisie.nl from the 1st of December.

• Fahrkomfort: Störfaktoren werden durch spezielle Innovationen in den Bereichen Federung, Dämmung und Sitze herausgefiltert, damit die Insassen sich wie in einem Kokon fühlen;
• Innenraumkomfort: Der Innenraum überzeugt mit einem großzügigen Raumangebot, praktischen Ablagen und pfiffiger Ausstattung;
• Bedienkomfort: Optimale Bedienung dank intuitiver Technologien, nützlicher Fahrhilfen und moderner Konnektivität;

Bedienkomfort dank intuitiver Technologien

THE HISTORY OF CITROËN’S COMFORT
EPISODE 3: COMFORT OF USE

The notion of comfort has always been at the heart of Citroën’s models for over 100 years.

In this period of confinement where everyone is rediscovering their interior, Citroën is returning to the Citroën Advanced Comfort® programme. A programme designed to guide the conception of Citroën vehicles towards a unique type of comfort, a true signature of the Brand.

A keystone in the development of current models, the Citroën Advanced Comfort® programme is a comprehensive, modern and multi-sensorial approach to comfort, which thinks of the passenger compartment as the interior of a house. Its aim is to make every journey in a Citroën as comfortable as in the living room.

It is based on 4 major pillars:

* comfort of driving to feel like in a cocoon
* comfort of living for a practical and functional interior
* comfort of use with intuitive technologies to simplify life
* comfort of mind to experience a warm and bright atmosphere, with everything in its place

4 major areas of differentiation for the Brand’s models, driven by exclusive innovations such as suspensions with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions® or Advanced Comfort seats. Technologies accessible to as many people as possible.

4 pillars that can be found through concrete examples in the history of the Brand and that we propose you to rediscover through 4 episodes.
Today, episode 3, comfort of use.

COMFORT OF USE: INTUITIVE TECHNOLOGIES TO SIMPLIFY LIFE

INNOVATIVE STEERING WHEELS

For Citroën, functional comfort applies to the combination of highly ergonomic, easy-to-use cabin designs with technology that is intuitive and easy to operate. In the wider automotive sector, technology continues to take on greater prominence in cars; in some cases, to the detriment of user-friendliness. By contrast, Citroën has sought to apply new technology in such a way as to make its cars easier to use, with functionality enhancing comfort.

Reducing driving stress and fatigue has long been a core Citroën aim. The company believes true comfort lies in lightening the mental ‘load’ of driving, a talent particular to Citroën. For decades, Citroën has put functional comfort at the heart of vehicle design, leading the way when the company revolutionised two of the critical functional elements – the steering wheel and the dashboard.

Citroën led the way with a new steering wheel innovation in the early years of the 21st century, launching the fixed central steering wheel hub in the C4, seen also in the C4 Picasso and C5. With the proliferation of in-car technologies leading to more cluttered dashboards, many manufacturers started to move controls onto the steering wheel. Citroën’s clever design revolved around a static central hub, with a focused and easy-to-access command panel in direct line-of sight. Where other manufacturers’ controls rotated with the wheel, Citroën’s controls were static, making them clearly visible and easier to use. The innovation also met the tough safety demands of impact and airbag legislation.

Citroën used its steering to pave the way for another innovation: the company’s famous ‘turning’ headlights first featured in the 1967 DS, which aided night-driving by tracking the steering inputs to better illuminate the road ahead. Later, two of the SM’s six hydraulically levelled headlamps did the same. These lights feature as ‘intelligent headlamps’ in our cars today, but were introduced long ago by Citroën to enhance the easy, functional comfort of its flagship cars.

INSTRUMENTATION AND INNOVATION

Advanced ergonomic controls and innovative fascia designs provide further evidence of Citroën’s commitment to functionality, incorporating technologies in a way that enhances driver comfort.
The GS, GSA, CX and BX each featured advanced ergonomic controls and a design that offered ‘keyboard’ operated buttons for vital functions, in easy reach of the steering wheel. Later GSA models and the Citroën Visa also introduced a unique ‘satellite’ control panel, placing all the major controls at the driver’s fingertips. For the driver, this meant there was no need to take a hand off the wheel.

The CX pioneered the use of moulded plastics to create a level of design integration between the dashboard, console and door trim. One noteworthy element was the ‘flying saucer’-shaped instrument binnacle – the ‘Lunule’ – that supplied a crescent of controls around the steering wheel. The Lunule was a truly innovative design, dreamed up by sculptor, designer and artist Michel Harmand, who influenced Citroën design from the 1960s to the 1980s. At the time, this represented a new height for the ‘comfort of function’. As the Lunule evolved for application in other Citroën models, it was a concept aped by other car makers, as dashboard design embraced new plastic moulding technologies in the 1980s and 1990s.

The CX also featured a unique ‘revolving drum’ illuminated speedometer, with a large, magnified display of the car’s speed which revolved into a display window. This was easier for the driver to view and allowed a faster glance at the speedometer than a traditional needle on a dial.

The BX, first introduced in 1982, represents a new stepping stone in design, inside and out. Nearly 20% of the BX’s bodywork was made from plastics, and the cabin featured a moulded plastic architecture with fingertip control levers and sliders. With the 1985 BX Digit, Citroën pioneered a digital dashboard and display. Indeed, the BX Digit offered the world’s first digitally-signalled controls and centre console displays, alongside its digital ‘TV screen’ instrumentation. Using functionality to enhance comfort, the BX Digit provided a true forerunner to today’s digital dashboards.

INTEGRATING NEW TECHNOLOGIES

In the intelligent layout of dashboard and cabin controls, Citroën’s commitment to functional comfort demonstrates true innovation. Citroën functional design innovations include the first truly original cabin designs to seamlessly integrate new technologies to aid the driver and improve comfort and convenience. Lessons learned by the company over the decades now inform the development and integration of technology in Citroën’s contemporary cabins.

After earlier Lunule models, the C6 delivered Citroën’s first ‘head-up display’ (HUD) with vital information projected onto the windscreen for ease of reading. HUDs have since featured in many more recent models, including the SpaceTourer and the latest C3 Aircross. Citroën first introduced a digital driver instrument cluster on the Xsara Picasso, refining the concept for a number of models ever since. Today’s C4 SpaceTourer has a 12-inch (30cm) digital instrument cluster, displaying information to the driver and passengers in a functional, comfortable way.

Simplicity is at the heart of the information clusters now found in the brand’s current model lines. Connected touchscreen controls echo the functionality of smartphones and connect drivers and passengers to the outside world, with straightforward phone integration offered through MirrorLink displays and Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto®.

From the earliest ‘bending’ directional headlamps, through to the Lunule instrument cluster and today’s digital displays, the integration of new technology into any new Citroën has always been a matter of practicality and functionality.

Rund 2,5 Millionen Fahrzeuge produziert

Deutliches Facelift in 1985

When the CX was introduced in 1974, it caused big financial problems for Citroën before becoming a success – just like the Traction Avant forty years earlier. In 1934, tyre manufacturer (and major creditor) Michelin had to come to help Citroën, forty years later it was competitor Peugeot who took over Citroën and formed the PSA group.

Again forty years later, in 2014, CX expert Michael Buurma and Thijs van der Zanden of Citrovisie joined forces to create an unique CX-book. In an almost encyclopedic manner, and with great attention to detail, the creation and evolution of the Citroën CX is discussed by model year, by type and to the smallest detail. This also includes the models that never got beyond the drawing board: a five-door CX, numerous never realized interior designs, a CX GTi with a diesel engine and an extended CX Pallas, to name but a few that are covered… Overviews with technical data, chassis numbers, body colours, price lists plus sales and production figures complete the picture. The book is amply illustrated with hundreds of images, most of which have never been published before. This makes “De originele Citroën CX” an indispensable reference for the real Citroën lover.

Geburtstag!

RETROMOBILE 2016: SPARKS FLY AS MEHARI MEETS E-MEHARI

CITROËN will be at the Retromobile show (Paris, 3 to 7 February 2016) with its Méhari, from May 1968. Doubtless the most impertinent of all CITROËNs, Méhari revolutionized the cabriolet world with its plastic body, pop colours and unashamedly chummy attitude. Some 48 years later, CITROËN is reviving this unique spirit with E-MEHARI, an all-electric successor to its illustrious forebear, making its début appearance before the general public. Visitors to the show are in for a real ‘back to the future’ experience!

In May 1968, with what seemed like a whole generation on the streets of Paris in a wild quest for freedom, CITROËN unveiled a leisure vehicle way ahead of its time: Méhari, a completely atypical cabriolet built on a Dyane 6 chassis. Nobody at the time had ever seen anything like it: its fresh, brash and completely unpretentious attitude marked a full-scale revolution on the cabriolet scene.

Méhari was versatile, practical and economical. It made a perfect partner for seaside escapades, with its ingenious body in ABS plastic bringing light weight (525 kg) and total corrosion-resistance. You could even wash the car down completely using a simple hose. With its pop colours, it was offbeat yet perfectly friendly and optimistic, and eminently adaptable.

The chummy little CITROËN met with instant popular success, and soon became a symbol of freedom, extolling the joys of a simple, carefree lifestyle. It also enjoyed a considerable career on the silver screen (as in the highly popular “Le Gendarme” series with Louis de Funès) and on the roads of the world (Liège-Dakar-Liège in 1969, Paris-Kabul-Paris in 1970, etc.). And it even gave loyal service in the French army and police forces. Production of CITROËN Méhari was finally discontinued in 1987, after a career spanning close to 20 years, with production totalling 145,000 units.

Nearly 30 years after the close of this saga, an endearing chapter in CITROËN’s history, CITROËN is reviving the Méhari spirit of unconventional design harnessed for happiness. Specifically, CITROËN is announcing a successor to Méhari, in the form of E-MEHARI. The new model carries in many of the key features of its predecessor (bold, versatile, four-seater cabriolet in bright colours, with plastic body and fully washable interior, etc.) and adds the advanced technology of an all-electric power unit (with LMP battery developed by the Bolloré group), fully consistent with the new car’s spirit and typical usage patterns. CITROËN will be releasing E-MEHARI in the spring, but in the meantime visitors to the Retromobile 2016 show (Paris Porte de Versailles Exhibition Centre, 3 to 7 February 2016) can enjoy a preview of the new model, alongside its distinguished forerunner, the original Méhari, for an unforgettable ‘back to the future’ experience.

As well as Méhari, other legendary vintage CITROËNs on show (with participation from CITROËN collectors’ clubs) include the C6 from the nineteen-thirties, the Traction, an emblematic pre-war model, the 2 CV van, celebrating its 65th birthday this year, and the CX from the seventies.

The Amicale had published a retrospective article on the Méhari some time ago:

Artcurial auction Retromobile 2015 goes sky high – it’s just crazy

In the last couple of weeks right before the Paris classic car show “Rétromobile 2015” (www.retromobile.com), the media very prominently hyped the auction of the Baillon Collection – the “transporter magnate” had been able to acquire some automotive gems in the postwar years, but these were mostly not maintained – this auction now has taken a much unexpected positive outcome for both the former owneds of the car, and also for the the auctioneer Artcurial – we are sure some champagne corks were popped …

The results of the Baillon auction are partly in no economic or even symbolic reasonable limits – one example being the 1924 Citroën 5HP Torpédo, known as “Trèfle”, a car without further special history and in poorest condition – the auctioneer’s assessment in advance estimated an expected result of about 800-1000 Euro – you could confidently talk in this rust heap by a “cute flower pot for the front yard”.

But it sold – and wow how much it did! An incredible 23.840 Euro (!!!) were achieved – one should remark that an excellent restored vehicles of this type would be available on the market for around 15,000-25,000 Euros and is relatively easy to find. (makes me personally wonder who has consulted the buyer to invest into that…)

Also, the seller of one of the two Citroën CX state vehicles that were built for the former GDR State Council Chairman Erich Honecker in 1989, will surely by happy – his “CX rallongé” with only 17.500km mileage on the odometer was sold for 95.360 Euro. The car was built by order of the GDR by the Swedish bodywork specialist Nilsson specifically for the planned visit of the then French President Francois Mitterrand on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the GDR, the conversion is said to have cost 120,000 Swedish crowns. The visit, however, never materialized because of the Berlin Wall and the developments in Eastern Europe, and so the cars were never officially used …

The Artcurial Auction results in detail:
http://www.artcurial.com/fr/asp/searchresults.asp?st=U&archive_sale_value=2651+++&archive1=Consulter

Congrats to the former owners – and towards Artcurial.

40-jahre-citroen-cx-03

Deutliches Facelift in 1985

40 Years of Citroën CX

We are happy to share with you the press release by Citroën Germany on the anniversary of this iconic model, translation by Amicale:

On August 26 1974, today exactly 40 years ago, the Citroën CX was presented. As a successor to the legendary Citroën DS, the model of the upper middle class was the synthesis of all the technical developments of Citroën. In Germany a total of 111,049 units of the Citroën CX were sold from 1974 to 1991. The Citroën CX became famous in the 80s in Germany as a service vehicle of a famous TV Series.

Charming and inexpensive at the same time

40-jahre-citroen-cx-02

In 1969 came the start signal for the development of a successor to the DS model. The aim was to create a vehicle, tying in to the charm of the previous model produced since 1955, but the objective was to have it significantly less expensive to produce.

The Citroën CX was presented to the French President Giscard d’Estaing just before the Paris Motor Show 1974, following the international press launch in Lapland to which 25 journalists were given the opportunity to participate with a Citroën CX in the “Raid Arctique” from Galliväre near Kiruna to ride approximately 3000 km in a wide variety of road surfaces and weather conditions towards Paris.

The name of the Citroën CX goes back to the French term for the drag coefficient. The drag coefficient of the Citroën CX was 0.39 and thus at a very good level.

The Citroën CX was considered a synthesis of all the technical developments of Citroën. So he decreed among other things, a transverse drive unit, hydro-pneumatic suspension with constant ground clearance, independent suspension, disc brakes on the front and rear wheels and a dual-circuit power brake system. Later on the “DIRAVI”, a speed-sensitive and self-resetting power steering, was introduced. The concave rear window – just like the later “flagship” Citroën C6 – let the rain run centrally, allowing the to skip a rear wiper.

40-jahre-citroen-cx-01

The designed of the Citroën CX was executed under the direction of chief stylist Robert Opron was following only slightly on the previous model DS. Only the reduced track-width of the rear axle and the hatchback style was taken over to some extent.

Proven Engines

Two proven engine variants were delivered at first: the Citroën CX in 2000 took over the engine of the Citroën DS 20 with 1,985 cm3 and 102hp (75kW), allowing the vehicle to reach a top speed of 174km/h. The Citroën CX 2200 taking over from the the DSuper5 engine with 2,175 cm3 and 112hp (82kW) which could be accelerated up to a top speed of 179km/h.

“Car of the Year” in 1975

1975 Citroën CX was voted “Car of the Year”. It also received the “Prix de la Sécurité” and the “Prix Style Award”. That same year, the Citroën CX 2200 appeared as the luxurious variant “Pallas”. Shortly thereafter, with the CX 2200 D the first diesel engine was available which was used since 1973 in the models Citroën C32 and C35.

In September 1975, the station wagon variant Citroën CX Break followed which had an extended wheelbase of 25cm compared to the sedan. The break was also available as Familiale: a station wagon with the third rear seat row and offering room for up to eight people. The second new release came a few months later: the Citroën CX Prestige arrived on the market, which came up with an electronic injection in 1977, which led to an increase in power to 128hp (94kW) and a top speed of 190km/h.

Fastest cars with diesel engines

1978 Citroën CX was optically and mechanically evolved. After extensive conceptual work on the existing aggregate, the Citroën CX 2500 D came with 75hp (55kW) to the dealerships. With this drive and a top speed of 156km/h, the Citroën CX could claim the title as being the fastest car with diesel engine.

Significant facelift in 1985

As of July 1985, the Citroën CX was undergoing another larger evolution – including plastic bumpers and round dials instead of rolling speedometer in the interior. By an again revised turbo diesel engine allowing a top speed of 195km/h, the Citroën CX could again claim the title of being the world’s fastest diesel vehicle.

Available as estate car, special conversions and as presidential limousine

The Citroën CX Break served due to its length and available space without body modifications as the basis for many customized bodyworks – for example as a ambulance and hearses. Thanks to the hydropneumatic suspension, the Citroën CX had very high payload of over 700kg.

The luxury version Citroën CX Prestige was used by some heads of state as a presidential limousine. So, for example, Eastern Germany’s Erich Honecker used several Citroën CX Prestige, which were also extended and offered space for a third row of seats.

Between late summer 1974 and 1989 a total of 1,041,560 units of the series Berline (sedan) and 128,185 Break (station wagon) were produced.

The Citroën CX Club in Germany (www.cx-club.de) deals with the preservation and restoration of historic Citroën model and is considered an expert contact for questions about technology, acquisition and maintenance of the Citroën CX.

Please fetch the original press release of Citroën Germany here (German spoken only, sorry).

NB: We are also happy to notice that the company press release also addresses a club reference – the cooperation with Citroën, Amicale and the clubs once again proves an active and agile partnership. Well done! 🙂

And – of course – a big “thank you” to M. Robert Opron and his team to have realized such an iconic automotive legend which attracts a constantly growing number of thousands of enthusiasts organized in clubs worldwide towards this outstanding Citroën model… 🙂

Mai 232014

(English below)

The Anniversary of Today: 25 Years of Citroën XM

In cooperation with Amicale Citroën Deutschland, the German subsidiary of the manufacturer (Citroën Deutschland GmbH) has issued a press release today related to this “modern classic”:

25 years ago, on May 23 1989, Citroën wrote history with the launch of the Citroën XM and fulfilled at the time the public’s desire for a high end model. The new top model introduced a new generation of the hydropneumatic suspension, enriched with electronic components: the Hydractive suspension. By combining the highest level of ride comfort and active safety, the Citroën XM put a strong accent in the luxury market.

citroen-xm-3

Hydractive suspension

The Citroën XM, which had his first major appearance in September 1989 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt/Germany, as a world’s first Citroën introduced the merger of several components: the chassis of a conventional production vehicle, the intelligence of electronic management and the flexibility of the hydraulic suspension: The Hydractive suspension was born, an evolution of well-known hydropneumatics technology introduced with the Citroën DS and known from the XM’s precedessor, the Citroën CX. With the Hydractive suspension, for the first time a variable suspension with electronically controlled, variable spring and damping coordination was realized. Five sensors systems – the steering wheel, accelerator, brake, speed and body roll – are combined with the hydropneumatics and determined an optimal suspension setting within a thousandth of a second (soft comfortable or sporty and firm mode).

Awards

Shortly after his presentation of the Citroën XM has received numerous prestigious recognitions – it was elected as “Car of the Year 1990” and was also able to win a total of fourteen national and international awards.

Vehicle versions and Conversions

From May 1989 to July 1994, the first Citroën XM series (Y3) waas produced, designed by Bertone . The second generation series (Y4), produced from August 1994 to June 2000, differed externally by the centrally mounted badge, and a revised rear spoiler.

Initially there the Citroën XM was only launched as a hatchback. As of November 1991, the station wagon version “XM Break” supplemented with unusually large storage space was complementing the offer. The special series “Onyx” (1993), “Prestige” ( 1994) and “Harmony” (1996) came to the market. The luxurious versions “Pallas” (1993) and “Exclusive” – the latter , among other things with leather upholstery, African rosewood, and fully automatic air conditioning – completed the offer.

citroen-xm-v6-1

The Citroën XM was also subject to several conversions: amongst them, Heuliez built the Citroën XM Break Ambulance; and the German coachbuilder Rappold in Wülfrath (near Dusseldorf) allowed its use as a hearse.

The Citroën XM in arts

With its launch, the Citroën XM also became the object of art. In the exhibition “XM’Art” a selection of contemporary representations of the automobile, and in particular the new top model of Citroën was presented. The exhibition opened in May 1989 in Paris and then traveled throughout Europe.

The Citroën XM as a Presidential Limousine

The Citroen XM gained additional popularity was with the French president. François Mitterand sat on the Citroën XM , as well as his successor Jacques Chirac.

(English below, Francais au-dessous, en Nederlands)

New Citroën CX book on the market

The Citroën CX, just as legendary as its predecessor, the DS. A beautifully designed “voiture”, which turns even the worst road into a smooth carpet. Just look at the futuristic dashboard, it looks like it’s come straight out of a spaceship! Once you get used to the unconventional brakes and steering, you’ll never want to drive anything else.

In this book CX-expert Michael Buurma describes the CX with incredible attention to detail: the development and evolution, by year, by type and to the smallest detail. The book also includes the versions that never got beyond the drawing board; a five-door CX, never seen interior restylings, a GTi with a diesel engine and an extended CX Pallas, to name but a few…

Surveys with technical data, chassis numbers, body colours, price lists and sales and production figures complete the picture. Although written in Dutch, countless illustrations (often never published before) make this book a must-have for the non-Dutch speaking Citroën fan too.

For international inquiries, please contact www.citrovisie.nl resp info@citrovisie.nl for more details.

Thanks to the Dutch publisher Thijs van der Zanden for informing the Amicale Citroën Deutschland – and you! 🙂

For us this is another proof that the long-term partnership between the clubs, Amicale Citroën Deutschland and the manufacturer is in excellent shape and will continue to shape the joint engagement.

Here is our translation of the company’s press release:

Techno-Classica in Essen: Citroën-Clubs present the history of Citroën hydropneumatic technology

Next to the presentation of Citroën Deutschland GmbH in Halle 4 at the Techno-Classica in Essen also the German Citroën clubs are showing off at “Citroën-Straße” in Hall 9.1 (Booth No. 135) under the slogan “60 Jahre Hydro-Culture” (“60 Years of Hydro-Culture”). The hydropneumatic, a unique technology for generations of CITROËN vehicles, will be having it’s 60th anniversary this year.

The “Citroën-Strasse” will be organized by the Amicale Citroën Deutschland, the association of the non-commercial german Citroën- and Panhard clubs and partner of Citroën Deutschland GmbH. On the 400 sq.m. booth quite a number of different historical Citroën will be presented which demonstrate the historical evolution of the hydropneumatic at Citroën.

The exhibited Citroën Traction Avant 15-Six H with hydropneumatic rear suspension paved the way for the legendary Citroën technology. This model is perceived to be the introduction of the commercialization of the hydropneumatic suspension and was sold between April 1954 and June 1955 in more than 3.000 units.

With the introduction of the legendary Citroën DS 19 the hydropneumatic technology was extended to also support steering, brakes, a semi-automatic clutch and a full hydraulic suspension – at that time, a unique driving comfort was achieved. With a cutaway model of the Citroën DS the quite complex hydropneumatic technology will be made excitingly visible for visitors of the “Citroën-Straße”.

Wit the Citroën CX Turbo Serie 1 as well as with the Citroën CX prototype „Projet L“, but also with the Citroën M35 and the Citroën GS model painted in European flags „Drapeaux“, additional milestones of the history of the Citroën hydropneumatic can be admired at the Citroën-Straße booth.

The additionally presented Citroën SM is a proof that the rather comfortable hydropneumatic can be also be combined with a high sportive ambition for speeds up to 230 km/h.

The Citroën HY Ambulance with „Currus“ body shows that the brand also has been introducing this technology for their utility vehicles.

A cutaway model of the 1982 Citroën BX 16 TRS allows a visible presentation of the technology at the beginning of the 1980s..

With the Citroën XM – shown at Techno-Classica as the very rare „Multiplexée“/„Multimedia“ variant – the digital era of the management of the hydropneumatics was introduced.

An additional functional model of the Citroën hydropneumatic completes the exhibition at the “Citroën-Straße”.

The history of the hydropneumatic at CITROËN is continued in these days with the introduction of the Citroën C5 CrossTourer. Thanks to the Hydractive III+ and an intelligent traktion control it provides an excellent driving comfort.
