Citroën Netherlands moves to a new site

Unfortunately, another historically significant Citroën site in Europe is abandoned – that famous “Stadionplein Amsterdam” building was created between 1930-1931, designed by the Dutch architect Jan Wils in connection with the nearby Olympic Stadium Amsterdam (1928). Wils was an admirer of the American Frank Lloyd Wright, whose influence on this building is unmistakable.

Wils, who is regarded as the founders of the “Nieuwe Haagse School”, was commissioned in 1929 by NV Citroën Automobiles, as the company was then known, to design a new central building. The former headquarters was previously in the Weteringschans in Amsterdam, but instead of the widely scattered premises within the city limits now offices, showrooms and workshop should be merged.

citroen-stadionplein-amsterdam-02

In the suburbs originated in the immediate vicinity of the stadium, the new construction should be placed , and also the Amsterdam city government, which shows initially skeptical that a commercial building would not harmonize with the stadium, was impressed by the new architecture.

Wils said to have shown no interest initially only to accept a commercial contract work, but granted him artistic freedom and a generous fee to have then retuned him to execute this works…

The design was is completed in 1930 and offered a showroom, a “quick service” for ad-hoc repairs and offices on the ground floor and a large repair shop on the first floor which was reached by a sloping driveway.

Wils was looking at his draft to find a balanced interaction between the new building and the Olympic Stadium. The concrete skeleton of the building with large windows allowing plenty of light in the interior and at the same time shows much flexibility in its architecture and harmonizes so well with the adjacent stadium. The building was initially held in a yellow ocher, while it is now painted white. In the 70s, the building was renovated.

In addition to the maintenance costs of the buildings and infrastructure in particular parking problems, road access and modernization of the showroom for the two brands “Citroën” and “DS” and are the main reasons for moving to a highway A10 nearby new building. The move will take place at the end of 2014.

Amicale Citroën Website Statistik

(English below, Francais au-dessous)

Viel Spass beim Lesen!

Amicale-Statistics & New Brochure available

Dear unknown “secret friend” – let’s give a warm welcome to the 10-millionth access to our website this week! We’re very proud to have achieved this number within the timeframe from January 2010 onwards (this is when we started our statistics, the website had been alive since 2004 already so a largely higher number de facto has to be considered).

More than 230GB of data has been downloaded during this 30 month period. In average we count more than 12GB data transfer per month nowadays. Year over Year (YoY) we double the number of accesses and download volumes (excluding search engine traffic). In average, each visitor accesses 6.2 pages per visit.

This makes the Amicale Citroën Deutschland being one of the most frequented Citroën enthusiast portals in Germany and beyond.

Amicale Citroën Website Statistik

Some interesting facts:
* We’re very happy to see that most visitors are from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Netherlands.
* Interestingly, we welcome more visitors from the Russian Federation than from Belgium!
* More than 20 Percent of all visitors spend more than 2 minutes on our portal.
* 5 percent of all visitors are using mobile devices already, Android as double as much as iPhone / iPad users.

And – something that Citroën should be aware of: 22% of keyphrases being searched are….. around the “DS3” model! This means many people associate the Amicale with information about modern cars, and not vintage cars only. This underlines our position, that with support by the clubs, their members as well as the Amicale as “brand ambassadors”, the marque positively benefits from this perception.

Within the last 15 months, more than 1.500 subscribers from 31 countries have registered for receiving the Amicale newsletter, amongst them the ACI Delegates as well as many journalists and media representatives from Germany and abroad. They have received around 250 articles and blog posts published on the website so far.

Help spreading the word to your buddies in case you like this site. Thank you all for your support!

Oh, and by the way: our new Amicale Citroën Deutschland brochure is now available for download – German spoken only though:

Enjoy reading – and understanding – German! 🙂

The Citroën M35 Website relaunched

Yet another Citroën niche model is to honor this year: the Citroën M35 prototype is one of the rarest vehicles and one of the technically most acclaimed models of its era.

As a two-door coupe based on the Citroën Ami8, the Citroën M35 was built from 1969-1971 by Heuliez in Cerizay and served as testbed for the company to investigate the reliability of the new rotary technology. The carefully selected buyers had to operate the car about 30,000 km per year. The “Bureau d’Etudes”, the research and development departments of Citroën, were directly involved to fix and supervise the vehicles. The car was sold at a price of 14,000 FF – about the price of a Citroën ID19 accordingly, or about twice as expensive as a Citroën 2CV.

The M35 used a single-rotary Wankel engine which was developed by “Comotor”, a subsidiary of Citroën and NSU. Providing a 49hp from 497.5ccm (995ccm for converting the rotary engine volume on classic motor volume, according to 6CV), the 815 kg heavy vehicle could be accelerated up to 145km/h maximum speed. Up to 7000rpm were possible with the light-weight engine which only moved turbine-alike parts – the maximum torque being achieved at 5500rpm.

In contrast to the Ami8, the Citroën M35 was equipped with hydropneumatic suspension – thus being the only A-type car with that technology. Hydraulic pump and master cylinder are the same as in the Citroën GS.

From the originally planned 500 vehicles, only 267 were realized. In the fall of 1969, 6 first models were built and delivered to customers. In 1970, 212 M35 were built, and finally 49 in 1971. After the two-year test phase the owners were to decide whether to return the car to Citroën – combined with the offer of a new car purchase on favorable terms – or to keep the car, yet contractually excluded access to repair and spare parts. Those vehicles which were returned to Citroën were scrapped. Some have remained in private hands, were first driven, but then usually neglected and only a few years back come to new honors again and now are welcome to the exotic variety of Citroën meetings.

Some enthusiasts have set up its own website for the M35 which is providing lots of information related to the model in a very nice design layout. The constantly updated website features articles on cars, technical details and history of the M35, reference books and meetings around the M35.

Extensive documentation, background information and experiences were collected and which are going to be published over time. M35 drivers and owners are also asked to report here and register their vehicle. And of course, all interested parties are invited to learn about the M35.

And of course enjoy the site owner if they get pictures, information, etc. sent around the M35, which are then posted on the website.

And here’s the website (in Dutch, English and French):

www.citroenm35.com

Our greetings and thanks go to Aalderink Sander from the 2cvgarage.nl and Hugo Veldkamp for providing this information.

(Produktions-Zahlen u.a. nachzulesen auf www.ami6.de)

Vielen Dank!

Do you own a Citroën Ami Service?

As some of you might know, the Citroën Ami reached its biggest success when the “Break” (station wagon) model was launched, after 1964 Citroën had quite good sales figures and in 1966 the Ami was the best selling car in France.

Some of the “Break” were delivered also as type “Service” and “Service vitrée”, with and without side windows but mainly destined for the utility purpose. (chassis numbers and production figures are documented eg. at www.ami6.de)

The cars are nowadays pretty rare and also the search for special spare parts is tricky – many of these cars have been “ridden to death” and are way more worn out than their normal “Break” cousins or the limousine / saloon.

Thus, the Dutch club “Ami Vereniging Nederland” (AVN, www.amivereniging.nl) is about to establish a world-wide car register for those little vans. All owners of such a car of type Ami6 Service, Ami8 Service or Ami Super Service are kindly asked to help registering their car details.

Point of contact is Jochem van Dort, dortmull@ziggo.nl

Thanks a lot!

Viel Spass beim Schenken!

Or maybe you prefer to gift a Citroën 2CV Delivery Van AZU shaped USB-stick?

The 3D print production implies that a vectorized 3D model of an object must exist. It is made up of hundreds if not thousands of defined spatial coordinates and their connections to each other. Now when you’re reducing that number of 3D coordinates, it can almost suggest an automotive design resp. its development, with the ever more refined representation of the object.

A2Models has realized this for the DS – see the picture: “Low_Res DS” above.

Details on how to order: Download their newsletter on our Amicale-Citroen.de website.

CitroExpert, the Dutch, independent all-Citroën-magazine, will celebrate its fifteenth birthday

After the demise of the French Citroën-Revue, to which Wouter Jansen was a regular contributor, he and publisher Fred Jansz started CitroExpert in the autumn of 1996, thus making it the oldest surviving independent all-Citroën magazine in Europe. The first issues were, although full of articles of great interest, perhaps a bit lean and modest. But that changed: fifteen years onwards and 90 issues later reveals a mature magazine with as many different Citroën-related articles as there are Citroëns. To celebrate this birthday, a special issue on Citroën and/in the United States will be published early November. As it is nearly a century now that since André Citroën crossed the Atlantic with in the SS La France to visit New York, thereby getting inspiration for becoming the most important car manufacturer in Europe in the twenties and early thirties.

“Like the Citroën car production in 1919, CitroExpert started a bit as an adventure”, declares editor in chief Wouter Jansen with a smile, “but thanks to the huge family of Citroën-enthusiasts and -Drivers, both in the Netherlands and other countries, we were able to extend the magazine to what it is now: in depth as well as in width, a publication that it is unique with subscribers all over the world, even from Japan.” Covering topics from the first 10HP Type A via the Traction Avant, 2CV and DS through to the most recent developments, like the DS5 and futuristic concept cars, it is a
unique publication.

The special section of 100 pages on Citroën in the USA reveals many unknown facts and documents which are of interest to both specialists as well as the general public. How André Citroën set foot on American soil in June 1913 for the first time; the negotiations with General Motors to become a part of that conglomerate; the first official American distributor in 1921, … But also the fact that Citroën applied many modern techniques that were invented by American companies, like Budd with the all-steel bodies and Westinghouse who patented servo-brakes. However, the real popularity of Citroën in the United States started just before World War II, when California-based company Challenger Motors became distributor for the West-Coast – to sell a
virtually unique car in a country that doesnt knows no any boundaries. A subsidiary was founded in 1957 and they represented the brand during fifteen years, selling a number of different models: 2cv, Ami6, Méhari, H-van(!), DS and SM. Often adapted to special requirements, both by users and by law, like special headlights and even emissions – in a time that we did not know anything about greenhouse gases…

After closing down the factory ‘succursale’’in the mid seventies, some private (‘grey’) companies tried to earn a living by selling new Citroëns to American customers, like 2CV6 Charleston, CX, GS or XM. It must be said that this was not a hugely successful, some few thousands were sold in total. Nowadays, the only Citroën-like cars available overseas are rebadged Mitsubishi-clones (or was it the other way round…?) C-Zero, C-Crosser and C4
Aircross.

Apart from the very specials pictures and other documents shown in this publication, Olivier Marin, the French cartoonist well-known for this Citroën-related books, made a special cover in the spirit of comic legend Hergé: a drawing with André Citroën near his hero Henry Ford, driving a Citroën 5HP. On the background, the Hollywood Hills can be recognized, although the famous nine letters have been replaced by the word CITROEN.

CitroExpert is for the time being only published in Dutch and widely distributed in The Netherlands and Flanders Flemish-speaking Belgium, although subscriptions can be taken from anywhere. But who knows, a French edition might one day see the light of day eventually, as claim many enthusiasts?

Citroen DS “Totemobile” @ DEAF Den Haag 2011

In collaboration with DEAF (Dutch Electronic Art Festival), Chico MacMurtrie and his team at Brooklyn’s Amorphic Robot Works will present the “Totemobile” in the Atrium of The Hague’s city hall.

Totemobile is a robotic sculpture that initially appears as a life-sized representation of the culturally iconic Citroën DS automobile. In performance, this familiar figure is visually exploded, subverted and elaborated through various levels of abstraction until it reaches its final form: an organic 20-meter-tall totem pole. Upon reaching its full height, the work blooms with light, in the form of multiple organically-inspired inflatable sculptures suggesting the final maturation of an enormous biological organism. The work has just completed a three month exhibition in Citroën’s Champs-Élysées showroom in Paris, where it enjoyed its world premiere in November 2007.

The Totemobile is powered by electric linear actuators controlled by an Allen-Bradley industrial control system. The machine is equipped with multiple emergency stops and four state-of-the-art industrial safety laser shields wired directly into the emergency stop system. This emergency system halts all machine movement, should a member of the audience get closer to the work than is safely advisable. Totemobile and its safety and control systems were Veritas inspected for public display in France.

The Allen-Bradley computer system keeps track of the machines’ every location by monitoring more than 100 sensors. These sensors assure each component follows a precise unfolding and regathering of all of the mechanical and sculptural elements in this 42-degree of freedom artwork during its five-and-a-half minute ascent and one-and-a-half minute descent.

The initial form of the robotic sculpture is deceptively simple, and belies the existence of nearly 50 interdependent machines of varying aesthetic and functional purpose. As the sculpture opens and rises, these metal and inflatable machines give voice to varying modes of mobile abstraction, which develop throughout the growth and final “blooming” of the full, 20-meter tall work.

As the familiar structure visually decomposes into its constituent geometric parts, each part becomes a more organic version of the original, and eventually lends its decomposing body to support the life of the new organism it harbors. This automobile’s point of natural transcendence lies in its inflatable airbags: in protecting and distancing its unforgiving synthetic body from us, the inflatable provides a point of direct contact with biological frailty. This point of contact provides the “crack”, which harbors the germ of the unassailable automobile’s biological aspirations. The Citroen becomes fertile ground, which this growing inflatable seed covertly consumes, co-opts and subverts for its own needs – the new thriving body yielding where required to insure the viability of its new-found skeleton, the comfortable and utilitarian form of the Citroen DS leaving its pedestrian servitude and stretching to achieve the organic beauty and flexibility more subtly suggested in its original architecture.

The form of the totem pole is narrative in nature. As the sculpture rises, multiple narratives unfold. In the collision, negotiation and compromises reached between the organic and the inorganic aspects of itself, narratives suggesting entropy, domination, transformation, mortality and the nature of strength are exposed.

Once the resulting half-breed reaches its full mechanical height, the inflatables finally bloom brightly into view in a moment of hybrid ecstasy, and the mechanized lid opens revealing the new growth of an organic stamen. This sign of the fully-mature organism extends further into the sky as if seeking the sun. Taking large inflating breaths, it increases in strength and size. The elaborate organic machine assimilates and conforms to its architectural confines, as if it were using the limited space the building provides to support its own growth – reminding us of a tenacious growing ivy.

After 20 years of practice using robotics, seeking to create metaphors with machines, and emulating the human condition, MacMurtrie’s Totemobile is the first of his sculptures that attempts to drastically change the direction his work has taken by engaging popular culture. Totemobile is a hybrid of an iconic symbol of popular culture and the notion of organic aspiration. It is a car that makes a biological journey upward, instead of the culturally and mechanically familiar forward and reverse. In our comfort with cars, we are invited on that journey with Totemobile, reinspiring awe in the nature that has sheltered and conveyed us, long before the appearance of the automobile.

In using robotics to explore the natural world’s growth and transformation, MacMurtrie and ARW use means which are, at first sight, vastly divergent from their subject. This apparent collision of incongruous matter highlights the unexpected appearance of an elaborate robotic device, whose sole purpose is its own living, and calls our attention back to the substance and priority of those basic biological systems of which we are a part. Systems whose fecundity and adaptability MacMurtrie’s work in robotics both emulates and envies.

Our creations in this world strive for an endurance and resonance so far achieved only by nature Herself. By moving away from the idea of longevity through unassailability, toward finding it in interconnection, interaction, and adaptability, perhaps we can express a higher form of intelligence in our own creations.

Chico MacMurtrie says: “I chose the Citroën DS, not because of Citroën’s sponsorship, but because it is an icon for European cars, and I felt that the live qualities it represented (hydraulic suspensions, organic curvature, and mechanical ingenuity) were emblematic of the time. I also chose the DS because it influenced my Mexican-American low-rider car culture. A low-rider was used by the Latin culture as a medium of expression… converting classic cars with hydraulic suspensions, utilizing elaborate paint jobs, became an art form.”

50 Years Of Citroën Ami: Le Tour des Pays-Bas

The Dutch Ami club organised a flamboyant festival in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Citroën Ami: l’Amiversaire.

Organising an event like that requires a ‘piece de resistance’. A wild idea from a troubled mind led to the re-enactment of a historic tour: le tour des pays-bas.

This was inspired by the record run Citroën performed in the mid sixties with two Ami 6 Breaks: 2077 km in 24 hours through France during the winter.

Five brave members of the Dutch club took up the challenge to cross the Netherlands through all provinces. Departure and arrival was at the festival grounds.

The team succeeded to visit all provinces in 24 hours. They drove roughly 1100 km in this heroic journey.

Many pictures were taken and all of the team members wrote their own story. This is collected in a luxurious book available now also in English!

Enjoy the funny, moving and sometimes even hilarious experiences of them all.

Beautiful Ami pictures and a very nice impression of some special Dutch locations add to this 44 page hardback, full color book.

Pre-order the book now for only € 31,95/ £ 28.00 excluding delivery cost of 700g book. We are trying to arrange collection and distribution of all the copies required in the UK

http://www.typehinternational.com/

english text:

For fans and friends of the new Citroën DS3, a Dutch producer has created a decent accessory: the “Citrobag” is a well-designed bag to be used for those who like to show off their passion for the French cars also when not driving one of those. Not only for DS3, but also for owners of 2CV, DS and other models from earlier decades there is a suitable and also contemporary-styled range of bags available as old tissues and decade-old seat material have been used for the production. Thus, you could hide your new laptop in style when eg. traveling to meetings and other events.

For owners of the Citroën DS Ambulance, Citrobag.nl also has created another reproduction: the famous “drapeau ambulance”, the flag which was mounted on top of emergency ambulances between 1960 to 1985 has been reproduced. In case this contemporary accessory got lost or is missing, that’ss your chance to complete your car (design: Boudewijn van den Bogaert, dengaert @msn.com) and the price is quite reasonable: ca. 15,- Euro!

The flagpole – in case this is missing, too – can be ordered from Ysogo Vlamnings via email to ysogovlamings@hotmail.com.
