Produktion TA Quai De Javel, Paris, 1952

Typ „Front“ in Köln

In a unique series, the Citroën brand reviews its 100-year model history. The type A 10 HP (1919), the 5 HP (1922) and the “Rosalie” (1932) are now followed by the Traction Avant. On 18 April 1934, the first model in the Citroën Traction Avant series, the 7A, was introduced. Its design astonished the experts, as Citroën, as one of the pioneers in Europe, used the front-wheel drive for the first time in mass production. This makes the Traction Avant one of the pioneers of the modern automobile. Part of the history of the Citroën Traction Avant is closely linked to the city of Cologne: In 1934, production of the “Front” type, the German version of the Traction Avant, began at the Cologne-Poll plant.

The Traction Avant was a technical revolution and a milestone in automotive history. The innovative front-wheel drive that gave the model its name was not the only surprise. The Citroën Traction Avant differed from most of its competitors of the time by its self-supporting, aerodynamic all-steel body. Engineer André Lefèbvre and designer Flaminio Bertoni had developed a well thought-out shape with a one-piece cabin construction and a balanced weight distribution, which was primarily achieved by the significantly lower centre of gravity, the wide track, the long wheelbase and the installation of the transmission in front of the engine and front axle.

The Traction Avant was also known for its excellent road holding and comfort. The floating engine reduced the transmission of vibrations to the vehicle interior. The rigid rear axle, which was guided by two trailing arms with torsion bar springs, also made a significant contribution to driving comfort.

Traction Avant, 11 Commerciale

Other innovations such as the hydraulic brakes, the independent front wheel suspension and the rack-and-pinion steering system, which was installed for the first time in 1936, caused no less a stir. Well thought-out details were just as well received: The front windshield of the Traction Avant could be easily opened at the bottom to ventilate the interior in warmer outside temperatures. In winter, a blind could be mounted in front of the radiator grille to allow the engine to reach its operating temperature more quickly.

The “floating” four-cylinder engine had overhead valves operated by centrifugally cast rocker arms and wet, removable and thus maintenance-friendly cylinder liners. The 32 hp engine with a displacement of 1,303 cm3 was equipped with a three-speed gearbox and had a consumption of 9 l/100 km. The maximum speed was 95 km/h.

The model of the upper middle class was advertised among other things with “La Traction Avant dompte la force centrifuge” – “The Traction Avant tames the centrifugal forces”.

The first type 7A, presented in 1934, was replaced within a few months by the more powerful types 7B and 7C; the type 7S (“Sport”) was further developed into the 11A and 11B. These were later colloquially known as “7CV” and “11CV”, named after their French tax classes. As an alternative to the classic sedan (as a smaller model “Légère” next to the “Normale”) also Cabriolet, Commerciale, Familiale and Faux Cabriolet (Coupé) were developed.

In addition to the legendary 1934 eight-cylinder prototypes (“22CV”), which were never produced in series and the whereabouts of which are a myth, the 15-Six (“15CV”) with 2.8-litre six-cylinder in-line engines produced from 1938 onwards became synonymous with comfortable travelling. The technical highlight in 1954 was the 15-Six H model with hydropneumatically sprung rear axle, the predecessor of the legendary DS.

Due to its excellent driving characteristics, the Traction Avant was popularly known as the “Gangster Limousine”. With its low centre of gravity, wide track and long wheelbase, legend has it that it was the ideal escape vehicle – which it also proved in many contemporary films and crime thrillers.

The Citroën Traction Avant produced a total of 759,123 vehicles between 1934 and 1957.

Type “Front” in Cologne

Between 1934 and 1935 the type “Front”, the German version of the Citroën Traction Avant, was produced in the factory in Cologne-Poll. A total of 1,031 units of the 7CV and 800 units of the 11CV were produced. Due to its Cologne origin, the type “Front” was also temporarily called “the bollard” in Germany.

Today a myth, the Traction Avant has paved the way for the modern automobile. In Germany, collectors and lovers of the model are primarily in the “Citroën Veteranen Club von Deutschland e.V.” (www.cvc-club.de), “Traction Avant! (www.tractionavant.de) and “Traction Avant IG” (www.tavig.de).

* Crème Princesse
* Demoiselles de Camaret en Bellevue
* Jambon en Croûte aux Epinards
* Poularde Strasbourgeoise avec Salade de Laitue
* Fromages
* Glace Petite Rosalie, Palmiers et Fruits

* Côtes Fronsac
* Mâcon
* Château Coutet 1920
* Vosne Romanée 1924
* Pommery et Greno
* Drapeau Américain

80 years of Traction Avant: Inauguration of the new Paris factory at Quai de Javel

As one of the historical documents related to the 80th anniversary of the Traction Avant, we present to you here the invitation to the inauguration of Europe’s most modern and largest automotive production of its time:

personen.andre-citroen-1932

While André Citroën had established his production facility since 1915 at the Seine riverside, known as the famous “Quai de Javel” (at the 15th district in the south-west of Paris), the site had to be modernized to keep pace with the anticipated growth of the company – it quickly turned out that the production capacity as it evolved during the 1920s were not dimensioned to suit the intended mass production.

While continuing the current production of the actual model range, the execution of this industrial groundbreaking renovation was done in a record-breaking time of only 5 months, now hosting new equipment for the efficient large-scale mass production and assembly of the anticipated new model to be build – the “Traction Avant”. Financially challenged by the difficult economic situation of the company, the banks were putting enormous pressure onto the project and insisted to be able to go into mass production as early as possible. The planned capacity was dimensioned to deploy around 360 cars per day (1934: 56.123 cars were produced in Paris) and was also prepared for a potential production enlargement: as we know, more than three quarters of a million of “Traction” were produced here at Quai de Javel!

On 8 October 1933, the new production halls were solemnly inaugurated. Under the patronage of Mr. Louis Serre, Commerce and Industry Minister in the government of Édouard Daladier (President of the Republic was Albert Lebrun) the banquet was held at the Citroën headquarters.

The culinary delights:

* Crème Princesse
* Demoiselles de Camaret en Bellevue
* Jambon en Croûte aux Epinards
* Poularde Strasbourgeoise avec salade de Laitue
* Fromages
* Glace Petite Rosalie, Palmiers et Fruits

and well as best-of-breed wines were complementing this premium dinner:

* Côtes Fronsac
* Mâcon
* Château Coutet 1920
* Vosne Romanée 1924
* Pommery et Greno
* Drapeau Américain

quai-de-javel-01

Automobile Citroën entertained at that time a dedicated company orchestra, known as the “Harmonie des Usines Citroën”, and entertained the guests alternating with the orchestra of the National Guard, and in addition to the amusing classics like “on the Beautiful Blue Danube” and the “Colonel Bogey” march of course the Marseillaise was not to be missed!

Finally, the well-known seven-minute “Marché Apotheosis” by Guillaume Balay was played – complementing the final execution of the opening ceremony!

Let’s close our eyes for a few seconds and put ourselves back to that moment time, imaging the great atmosphere and spirit during this special evening that will be remembered until today by quite a number of Citroënists worldwide……

🙂

We’d be happy to hear from you further info about the “Usines Citroën” as they help our many-thousand-readers to learn more about this era. Please leave a comment below. Thank you!

(English below, Francais au-dessous)

—–

85 years ago, Citroën launched its automotive production in Cologne / Germany

85 years ago, on 15 February 1927, the Citroën Automobil AG commercially registered in Cologne and started mass production of vehicles in the same city. With a brief interruption during the Second World War, the French car maker is based in Cologne.

1926 Citroën had purchased a 38,000-square-metre complex with spacious, bright factory buildings in Cologne-Poll. It was rebuilt within a year to prepare for a car factory with a modern automobile assembly plant and its own railway sidings. Already in the first year of production Citroën employed around 400 people and started with the production of the first Citroën “Made in Germany”, the Citroen B14. In subsequent years, some 20,000 Citroen vehicles were produced in Cologne, amongst them the C4, C6, 7CV Traction Avant, as well as trucks and buses.

After the annexation of the plant site by the Nazis on 1st March 1940, it took about ten years before the car manufacturer was able to gain a foothold again. In February 1950, the newly established “Citroën Automobil AG, Verkaufsgesellschaft für Deutschland”, settled their office space in Cologne’s “Cäcilienstrasse”.

However since vehicles were not produced any longer in Germany. Today’s “Citroën Deutschland GmbH” has been based since 1959 in the Cologne district of Porz-Westhoven. The Citroën headquarters in Cologne employs about 280 people. In Germany, a Citroën dealer network of some 250 contractors for the sale of new cars exist, and some 800 authorized workshops providing the service nationwide.

To mark the anniversary, the Mayor of Cologne, Juergen Roters will deliver the city’s congratulations as part of a Citroën event on 13 February 2012 by 11 clock in the “post-design” building in Cologne-Deutz (Deutz-Mülheim-Straße 22a, 50679 Cologne).

Here is the press release in the original download (German spoken though).

Weitere Details – Unterkunft, Reise etc. (Hotelvorausbuchungen sind Pflicht!) – entnehmen Sie bitte dem englischen Text weiter unten.

Weitere Anfragen richten Sie bitte an grahamhandleyhandley@btinternet.com

Vielen Dank!

THE FIRST UK CITROEN TRACTION AVANT
SAFETY and RELIABILITY RUN – SUNDAY MAY 6th 2012

This is your opportunity to test and prove the Safety and Reliabilty of the Traction Avant and in particular your own car and your driving ability.

The event will follow some of the motor vehicle trial and test routes of the 1920’s and 1930’s which, it is said, helped to develop the motor vehicles as we know them today. It is based on the route of The Beamish Safety and Reliability Trial (known as The Beamish Run), re-started in 1971 by The Friends Of Beamish Museum, for any pre-1956 Classic Car.

It is run annually, always on the 3rd Sunday of June. 130 cars did the run in 2011, two were Tractions which completed the course and both drivers and navigators said it was a “wonderful experience”.

Because of restricted numbers able to participate, and clashing with other TOC events, it has been decided to hold a seperate independent Traction run in spring 2012, offering a similar style run to all Traction Owners and for Tractions only.

Whilst testing you’ll see some of England’s best countryside and viewpoints.

The 155-mile route will wind its way through the charming and unspoilt County Durham countryside and forested areas to Barnard Castle said to be the gateway to the Dales. Passing by the wonderful French chateaux style portico of the award winning 19th century Bowes Museum. Then on to the Yorkshire Dales over the Stang Forest hills to Arkengarthdale, then turning for Low Row and Gunnerside, heading on to the majestic Buttertubs Pass, via the village of Muker. The route runs through Swaledale via Hawes and onto Bainbridge for a well earned lunch stop. The afternoon session starts with a climb from Askrigg and back to Muker.

The route continues via Thwaite, Keld then up Silver Hill to Tan Hill (Britains Highest Pub – if time permits, “Time for a beer perhaps!”) We then head across Bowes Moor to enter Cumbria briefly and on to Brough and the Durham Dales.

Over Hamsterly Common and into Weardale. Into Stanhope, missing out the ford crossing up Crawleyside Bank and on to Stanhope Common. The route now heads to Lanchester along interesting old Roman roads and back to Chester-le-Street.

The Run is meant to be a testing run for both car and driver but is not a competition. It is not meant to be a vehicle breaking course but as the route takes you over open wild countryside, before embarking you should ensure your car is up to it.

Occasional checkpoints will be in place to assess your knowledge of the Traction, the route and your driving ability.

It is meant to be fun and adventurous. You will need a navigator/co-driver.

As you know, two Tractions have already completed the course so it can be done and you and yours can do it as well.

So, make this your first weekend event for 2012. Drive to County Durham on the Saturday, stay over at one of the suggested hotels, do the run on the Sunday, stay over on the Sunday and head back home on Bank Holiday Monday.

Excluding accommodation and meals (a BBQ may be offered after the Run if there is demand) we expect the cost to be no more than £15 per car to cover Run plaque, achievement car badge, postage etc.

Run-rallyplaat, autobadge, kosten enz.

ACCOMMODATIE

Single £25 per kamer/per nacht plus £10 supplement per nacht.
