Citroën Deutschland has released another press information today which we’re proud to share with you:

Techno-Classica in Essen: Citroën Clubs present the history of 6 cylinder models of Citroën

Besides the presence of Citroën Germany GmbH at the Techno-Classica in Essen, which is themed “Citroën and the open pleasure,” the Citroën clubs are exhibiting on the so-called “Citroën-Strasse” in Hall 9.1, and show a retrospective of the 6-cylinder Citroën models.

Organized by the Amicale Citroën Deutschland and dedicated to the fair presentation of the association of the non-commercial German Citroën and Panhard clubs, and as a partner of Citroën Deutschland GmbH, another interesting topic of the Citroën history will be on show: The 400-sq.m. booth of the “Citroën-Strasse” in Hall 9.1 is dedicated to “The 6-cylinder models of Citroën”. Visitors will get a presentation of a wide selection of historical Citroën and Panhard models that were equipped with 6-cylinder engines and available for decades, particularly representing the innovation in the automotive industry from the French manufacturers.

The story of the 6-cylinder vehicle production at Citroën began in October 1928 at the Paris Motor Show with the introduction of the Citroën C6, which was four years later continued by the “Citroën 15” which also affectionately were called “Rosalie”. 1938 the next chapter was created by the 6-cylinder version of the Citroën Traction Avant, the 15-Six.

Moreover, the “Citroën-Strasse” will present a rare 6DS Panhard cabriolet from 1929, which is equipped with a slide-controlled 6-cylinder engine with a displacement of 3,507cm3.

A symbol of prestige in combination with 6-cylinder technology is the Citroën SM with Maserati’s engine technology developed under the direction of Giulio Alfieri resulting in the 90°-V6-engines with 2.7- and 3.0-Liter capacity. A modern classic, the Citroën XM, will complete the retrospective. The special exhibition is complemented by other Citroën types such as a DS 19 Préfecture, a Citroën CX Prestige, a Citroën BX RS and a Citroën 2CV AZAM.

Another highlight of the exhibition is the display of two prototype engines: One water-and air-cooled 6-cylinder engine in a compact form, which was supposed to be introduced to the Citroën DS, however, were never went into official production, is presented for the first time in Germany.

Vom 15.

Rosalie_8CV_2_Places_Faux_Cabriolet_1933

80 years ago – Citroën “Petite Rosalie” going for world records

From 15 March to 27 July 1933 – exactly 80 years ago – the Citroën 8CV went on the circuit of Montlhery for some record hunting. 300,000 kilometers in 134 days at an average speed of 93 km/h: These stunning figures were achieved by the Citroën 8CV, affectionately called “Petite Rosalie”, and under the constant supervision of the Automobile Club of France which could register a series of new records. Company founder André Citroën promised that competitive constructor who would be able to supersede this mileage, a prize of three million francs.

First presentation of “Rosalie” 1932

The “Rosalie” was first presented in the fall of 1932 at the Paris Motor Show. The three models presented Citroën 8CV, 10CV and 15CV went under the name “Rosalie” in the history of the automobile and were equipped with the innovative new “floating” (“moteur flottant”) engine suspension. A new brand label was introduced, incorporating a swan pointed which pointed to the new engine bearing technology which was produced in the Citroën factory at Quai de Javel in Paris. The floating power of the engine suspension device brought with it the engine mount at two points along the longitudinal axis – the engine could thus swing freely. For the reduction of the vibration a special rubber buffer was mounted. The “Rosalie” were available with different bodies and interiors – as an open two-seater, as well as a sedan or van with box or platform body.

In 1934, the models of “Rosalie” series have been upgraded – they received more streamlined bodies and the addition of NH (“nouvel habillage” – new design and comfort) for the model name.

Citroën 8CV – the “Petite Rosalie”

The elegant Citroën 8CV – also affectionately called “Petite Rosalie” – was the smallest vehicle of the “Rosalie” series. A hallmark element was the new one-piece body, which was even more rigid than the previous all-steel bodies. The four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,452cm3 had 32hp (24kW) – so that they could achieve speed of up to 90km/h. 36 hp (26 kW) in 1934 was built into the new 8CV NH Légère. The power transmission to the rear wheels was done via a three-speed transmission. From October 1932 to January 1935 a total of 38,835 units of the “Petite Rosalie” were built.

Citroen 10CV

With a length of 4.57 meters, the Citroen 10CV was 30 centimeters longer than the “Petite Rosalie”. Equipped with a four-cylinder engine with 1767cm3 displacement and 36hp (26kW), it reached a top speed of 100km/h. From this Citroen 10CV series, several body variants as well as the lighter version “Rosalie” 10CV NH Légère was available. Until 1935, Citroën produced a total of 49,249 units of the Citroen 10CV.

Citroen 15CV

In the 15CV version the “Rosalie” had an elastically mounted six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2,650cm3 and 56hp (41kW). The larger motor meant that the front end had to be extended by 15 centimeters. Even for the Citroën 15CV different bodies and equipment were available. In addition, there was a Légère version that reached a top speed of 120km/h. From October 1932 to January 1935, 7228 copies of the Citroen 15CV were built.

The German “Rosalie”

From the 15th February 1933 onwards, in Germany 440 workers produced the “German Rosalie” in Köln-Poll. During construction, the use of foreign parts was waived. The “Rosalie” was thus a German brand with the appropriate emblem “German work”. It was advertised with the slogan: “The new 1.4-liter engine with a floating – very German, German all parts, German suppliers.” Within two years in Cologne-Poll, 1789 vehicles were built and sold.

Mrz 142012

(English below, Francais au-dessous)

Vom 21.-25.

An 5.

    Folgende Werksteams traten damals an:

    * Datsun mit einem 240Z (255PS), zwei 180BSSS (175PS), 1600SSS (125PS und 150 PS).

    * Peugeot 504 Gr2 (180PS + 140PS), 504 Gr1

    * Citroën: DS23 Gr2 (175PS), zwei SM Proto (250PS) und einem GS Gr2 (80PS).

    * Renault: R17 TS (155PS), einem Alpine 1800 Gr4, und R16 TS

Robert Opron

Herzlich Willkommen also vom 21.-25.3.2012 in Halle 9.1 und Halle 4!

Welcome to Citroën-Strasse at Technoclassica 2012!

For the 24th time, from March 21-25 2012 world’s largest fair for classic cars, “oldtimer” and youngtimer, motorcycles, spare parts and restoration in Essen / Ruhr opens its doors. Of course, all 1,200 exhibition booths in the 20 exhibition halls and on the open-air grounds of the Essen Trade Fair are fully booked. With more than 2,500 collector’s automobiles, vintage cars, classic and young classic cars on sale, the organiser of TECHNO-CLASSICA, S.I.H.A., can offer the expected 180,000 visitors more than just the world’s largest range of fancy vehicles, themed “Only the best…”: also in 2012, the TECHNO-CLASSICA will again be the world’s largest historic show of the international automobile manufacturers.

And right in the middle of the fair is again the “Citroën-Strasse”. At its usual location in Hall 9.1 (upper level), the association of all German Citroën clubs presents two major topics:

  • the Citroën SM Club Germany celebrates its 25th anniversary and presents in this context not only the “Grand Tourisme”, that prestigious sports coupe from which only 12.920 copies were built between 1970-1975, but also a unique prototype which is known as the “1973 SM Rallye Bandama”, from the famous “Conservatoire,” the heritage collection of the manufacturer.

Driven by Björn Waldegaard, this group V prototype finished third overall in the 1972 TAP Rally in Portugal. In the 1973 Bandama Rally – still known as the Ivory Coast Marathon – it was driven by the Verrier-Umbricht team and came in sixth behind an identical SM driven by Neyret-Terramorsi (5th) and the group II DS23 of Bochnicek-Kaja (3rd). Of the seventy three cars that started the rally, only eight arrived at the finishing line 4,000 kilometres later, having overcome all kinds of obstacles.

Depending on the demands, top speeds achieved were in the range between 240km/h up to 255km/h. …

Surely this unique rolling prototyping platform is a very special object for studies not only for Citroën fans, but also for those who prefer the “conventional” to the electronically controlled technologies, and which are the results from thorough and innovative mechanical engineering services at a time when no PC was available to dimension this complexity of installation.

Also the rest of the Citroën-Strasse booth space this year is again under a particular theme:

  • Following the slogan “The Legendary Citroën World Meetings”, the other clubs will present a retrospective of the vehicles from the last decades which could be found at various Citroën meetings, for example at the ICCCR (International Citroen Car Club Rally). The ICCCR are considered being the “Mecca” where Citroën enthusiasts meet, as thousands of Citroën and Panhard vehicles are coming together every four years and celebrate the success story of a company’s product line which started in 1919.

This year, the ICCCR world meeting will take place in Yorkshire, England. At Citroën-Strasse, the organizers will present their event with us and invite all of you to still benefit from the favorable early booking discounts. Also next year will be another major event for Citroën enthusiasts – the 20th 2CV World Meeting will be held in the northern Spanish city of Alcañiz. The organizers will present their event as special guests of Amicale Citroën Deutschland.

And of course, are again very special vehicles at the Citroën-Strasse booth:

  • We expect a very rare version of a right-hand drive Traction Avant 1939 roadster (cabriolet) made in England. Citroën had set up some production facilities in Slough / UK to produce vehicles which meet the rather particular taste of potential English buyers. Since at least 51% of all parts of this Slough-built Citroën are made in England, the manufacturer could avoid the “import tax” and thus sell the rather unfamiliar French cars at an attractive price on the island.

  • Also, the “goddess” Citroën ID19 Safari 1964 will arrive from across the channel. Under the name “Safari” Citroën marketed in England the estate models (in France sold as “Break”).

  • The Dyane IG, which represents since the last year in Germany the interests of the “sister” of the 2CV, presents a very rare two-window “Dyane 6 Commerciale Confort” from 1968. The Dyane this year celebrates its 45th anniversary, as it was sold from 1967.

  • Yet another birthday can be celebrated this year – the famous Rosalie will be presented in its former glory.

  • One of the most sought-after classic newcomer cars, the CX will be present at the “Citroën-Strasse” booth as a station wagon. We will feature a “CX 2000 Super Break” in excellent condition which is also the oldest known existing Citroën CX Break station wagon in Germany. The CX Break was for many not only a large-capacity transporter for families and businesses, but could be found on countless Citroën meeting as a “rolling sleeping bag”.

  • Another Traction Avant from the postwar period (the “gangster limousine” was built 1934-1957) will be “on show”. The 11CV is an inseparable part of Citroën’s meeting.

This year we are expecting a very special guest of honor at our booth: Robert Opron, chief designer of Citroen, which we owe the design of the SM, the CX and GS, will visit us during the weekend at our booth. We are especially pleased to welcome the “grand master” of Citroën’s perception in the 60s and 70s again with his wife Genevieve Opron. He will be accompanied by the exhibition organizers of EXPO BERTONI, Patrick André and Rosemarie Gumz, whose design exhibition of life and work of the also famous Flaminio Bertoni, Opron’s predecessor, can be seen in parts at the Citroën booth in Hall 4.

Another highlight will be the presence of cartoonist of vintage comics from the publisher Eckart Schott. We are delighted to see that famous comics such as “Le Gang des Pinardiers” is finally getting a face, and you will get to know “the brains behind”!

We also welcome members of the “Amitié des Françaises de Düsseldorf” which is a non-profit organisation of ca. 300 women, French origin or French speaking ladies who live in or around Dusseldorf. As we have set up initial contacts at the Dusseldorf French festival last summer, we jointly planned to intensify our relationships and certainly will have a good time at our Citroën-Strasse “bistrot”… 🙂

The Amicale Citroën Deutschland will hold its Annual General Meeting on Saturday, 24 March 2012 and invites all clubs and their presidents to get informed on the upcoming ICCCR event, the 2CV World Meeting 2013 and listen to latest news from Citroën, as well as to elect the new Delegates for ACI in Germany.

But there’s more to come – also the German subsidiary of Citroën has released a press notice, translation by ACI-D S. Joest:

“… Citroën Germany this year will present a quite extraordinary offering at the Techno Classica fair: “Citroën and arts” is the tagline of the booth of Hall 4. In cooperation with the Citroën Conservatoire in Aulnay-sur-Boin, the “corporate memory” with a collection of more than 400 historic Citroën vehicles and large archives in the north of Paris, Citroën Germany is currently preparing an attractive presentation of artistic depictions of historical Citroën automobiles.

It’s not just about two-dimensional works of art, eg. paintings, drawings and photos, but also about the memory of elaborate three-dimensional presentations of automobiles with the “double chevron” trademark. There are examples in the history abundantly, among others at the Paris Motor Show of 1962, as a vertically suspended Citroën DS, the famous “Fusée” (rocket), was presented. Also many remember the spectacular performance of the DS in 1959 on four balloons on water instead of wheels to symbolize the hydropneumatic suspension comfort.

Citroën Germany still keeps it’s presentation a big secret. “We have so many choices, but space is limited even now, so we are working on the details with the clubs as we speak” said Stephan Lützenkirchen, Press and Public Relations Director of Citroën Germany.

And there is another anniversary to celebrate this year: 80 years ago, in October 1932, the Citroën Rosalie was presented as types 8, 10 and 15. Even though it’s successor, the legendary Traction Avant, was introduced in 1934, the Rosalie was produced yet another year in many variants, eg. as an open two-seater, coach, limousine, van with box or flatbed, and many people will remember the legendary “Petite Rosalie” which set in 1933 over 190 national and 100 international records in her 300.000km round trip at Montlhéry.

The gap to the present is bridged by the brand-new Citroën DS5 with it’s Hybrid-4 propulsion technology (Diesel engine for the front axle and electric motor for the rear axle), which continues to present the Citroën tradition to build avant-garde cars.

As in previous years, Citroën Germany is working closely with the Citroën clubs. In addition to the presentation of Citroёn Germany the clubs will present at the “Citroën-Strasse”, the Association of all German Citroën clubs, a great offering along 400 square meters in Hall 9.1, this year focusing on “25 Years of Citroën SM Club Germany” and a retrospective on the legendary Citroën world meetings…

So – come and see us – we’re happy to welcoming you at Essen!

März 2012 in Essen stattfindet.

(English below, Francais au-dessous)

85 years ago, Citroën launched its automotive production in Cologne / Germany

85 years ago, on 15 February 1927, the Citroën Automobil AG commercially registered in Cologne and started mass production of vehicles in the same city. With a brief interruption during the Second World War, the French car maker is based in Cologne.

1926 Citroën had purchased a 38,000-square-metre complex with spacious, bright factory buildings in Cologne-Poll. It was rebuilt within a year to prepare for a car factory with a modern automobile assembly plant and its own railway sidings. Already in the first year of production Citroën employed around 400 people and started with the production of the first Citroën “Made in Germany”, the Citroen B14. In subsequent years, some 20,000 Citroen vehicles were produced in Cologne, amongst them the C4, C6, 7CV Traction Avant, as well as trucks and buses.

After the annexation of the plant site by the Nazis on 1st March 1940, it took about ten years before the car manufacturer was able to gain a foothold again. In February 1950, the newly established “Citroën Automobil AG, Verkaufsgesellschaft für Deutschland”, settled their office space in Cologne’s “Cäcilienstrasse”.

However since vehicles were not produced any longer in Germany. Today’s “Citroën Deutschland GmbH” has been based since 1959 in the Cologne district of Porz-Westhoven. The Citroën headquarters in Cologne employs about 280 people. In Germany, a Citroën dealer network of some 250 contractors for the sale of new cars exist, and some 800 authorized workshops providing the service nationwide.

To mark the anniversary, the Mayor of Cologne, Juergen Roters will deliver the city’s congratulations as part of a Citroën event on 13 February 2012 by 11 clock in the “post-design” building in Cologne-Deutz (Deutz-Mülheim-Straße 22a, 50679 Cologne).

Here is the press release in the original download (German spoken though).

85 ans de Citroën à Cologne / R.F.A.

2012: Celebrating 80 Years of Citroën Rosalie in Montlhéry

Already now the announcements for next upcoming big events are being submitted to the Amicale Citroën Germany. This time, our French contact Jean-Francois Soyez has forwarded us some information about the 80th anniversary of the “Citroën Rosalie”, a car many of us associate with *the* Art Deco style and which plays for Citroën an important role, briefly before the famous Traction Avant is being introduced.

As a successor of the C4 and C6 models, the Rosalie series allows André Citroën to firstly achieve substantial profits after introducing the US way of efficient chain mounting in the automobile production lines. The models 8CV, 10CV and 15CV – baptized according to the French taxation system – were the first ones to receive the Chrysler licensed patent of floating motor suspension, the famous “Moteur Flottant”. The models could be ordered in different body variants, amongst them coach, limousine, faux cabriolet and cabriolet.

On the weekend of May 19th and 20th 2012, the anniversary event takes place at the race track of Montlhéry near Paris where also the famous “Petite Rosalie” has filed for many world records – and most likely we’d expect to see the replica version of it to turn heads when run along the track…

All Citroën models are warmly welcome to join the event. More info at www.citroen-rosalie.com.

Merci, Jean-Francois!
